This is the first short story I've ever written. I'm very proud of it too. |
Even after being charged for multiple cases of DUI this guy was still at it... He had totaled many cars in the past... but this time was different... this time human lives were involved. A family of five was killed due to this guy's careless respect for human safety. My two younger brothers, Alex and Leon, and my mother, Clair, and I were all watching the news just for this particular story. The guy had committed suicide when he found out that he would not only be charged but also being sentenced to life in prison. My brothers were too young to really process what was going on and how important this was. My father walked in and slammed the door... "I have had it up to here with my director," he said furiously. "What happened," my mother asked. "The director's making me re-edited the entire movie over again... You know how long and hard I worked on editing that movie?!" It's true; all the movies that my father has edited and that we've seen have been breathtaking. My mother got up and kissed my father. "I understand you've had a hard day at work today, but on another note could we maybe visit my parent's grave tomorrow," my mother asked. My last grandparent had died just last summer. My father agreed to come with us to the cemetery. "Enough about how bad my day was how was everyone else' day," my father asked. My mother pulled out $50 from her pocket. "I got the biggest tip I have ever received in my whole career as a waitress... $50 from one person!" Whatever that person ordered must have been really good. But then again my mother is a pretty damn good waitress. "I got an A on my ten page report on contributes other cultures have given to our society today." I said. Getting an A on something was never very surprising, after all I was a straight A student, but my parents were still always proud of me. "Very good," he said. "Alex, tell your father what the judge said about the project you two worked so hard on," My mother said. "H-he said it was the b-best thing he's seen at a science fair in-in a long t-time," Alex said with a very proud look on his face. Alex has a really bad stuttering problem, but we just assume he'll grow out of it. "Has the judge never seen a robot before," My father asked. "Luke, please, that robot was more like a human with artificial intelligence... It could do just about anything on command. And I bet those kids don't have access to the kind of technology that we have." My mother had a good point. Our basement is like a giant laboratory because when our father wasn't working at 20th Century Fox he was inventing and messing with stuff he really shouldn't be messing with but nothing's gone wrong...yet... "How about you, Leon, how was your day?" My father asked. "I finished another book for the reading challenge for school." Leon could read the book The Hobbit in a couple of days. He loved to read, especially comic books. "How many books does that make?" My father asked. "I don't know like... twenty... I'm way ahead of everyone so I just stopped counting because the person with the second most books read has read eight," Alex said. We are the family of excellence. People call us the Excellent Exyvorrs (Exyvorr is our last name). That was pretty much our whole evening, because my father doesn't get home till 9:30 and after we talk about our day we all go to bed. The next day we go to the cemetery to visit my grandparent's grave. While we were there I saw Alex wander off in a catacomb where I believe they put the caskets of dead war generals. After a while Alex came back with something in his hand... something shiny. "Hey! Look what I found!" Alex showed us what he "found," it was a gem, a diamond to be more exact. "Where did you find this sweetie," My mother asked. "I-I found it... uh... on the ground." He said. Because Alex had a stuttering problem you could never tell if he was nervous because he always sounded like he was nervous. My mother had no problem where we find stuff... as long as we didn't steal it. "Okay, then." After we were done at the cemetery we went home. We put the diamond in the ring box that our father used to propose to our mother with and placed it on the mantle above the fireplace. Mother and I were making dinner, I'm more like my mother when it comes to likes and dislikes. "Steven, would you please get your brothers for dinner," My mother asked me. I walked to the bottom of the stairs. "Alex, Leon! Time for dinner!" I went back into the kitchen and took the food and started setting the table. Alex and Leon ran down stairs and past the diamond, knocking it over and shattering it into multiple pieces. My mother and I ran into the living room to see what that noise was and there it was the diamond shattered into pieces. "Aw, that was a nice display too... Alex, Leon, which one of you did this," mother said with an angry voice. Alex raised his hand slowly. Our house policy is some-what similar to a store policy, "You break it, you buy it" only ours is "You break it, you clean it." So Alex cleaned it up and that was that. At the dinner table we were all eating when we felt a rumbling sensation. "D-do you guys feel that?" Alex asked. "It's probably just something acting up downstairs." My father said. My mother stopped eating and looked at him. "Well you don't seem very concerned that the house might explode," she said "Clair, stuff is always going on down there... there's nothing to worry about." My father said. We just decided to ignore it. Since it wasn't a week night we all stayed up later. We never do anything extra we just do more of what we usually do. Alex stays down stairs in the basement with my father and they do stupid stuff with periodic elements, Leon reads comics, and I'm either drawing or watching T.V. with mother, in this case... watching T.V. with mother. We start talking. "Do you think Alex really found that diamond just lying around? You don't just find diamonds laying around," mother said. She was right... "You're right, and plus if he did find it on the ground you would think it would've been a little dirty..." I said. We heard a loud shattering sound. I wander what broke this time. We found the source of the sound. There were pieces of the diamond on the floor in the shape close to that of an eye. "I thought I told Alex to clean this up..." My mother said frustratingly. " You did... and he did... I watched him clean it all up. He didn't miss any shards. And is it not weird at all to you that the pieces form an eye shape? That doesn't just happen you know." I told my mother. We decided not to think too hard about it. It was midnight and we all went to bed and shut off our lights. But one of my brothers didn't turn off his light, Alex. My mother went into his room and after that I heard something like when you're so scared you can't process a scream so it's just individual squeaks as if parts of a complete scream. She gasped really loudly. "Oh my G-d, Alex!" I ran into the room and saw the most horrifying thing ever... severed body parts and organs scattered on the floor as if Alex had just exploded... and on his wall was his head, eyes hanging out of their sockets, partially ripped off jaw, just hanging there. All of his teeth had been pulled out one by one and placed on his bed. And also on his wall was the number 6 painted in his blood. My father ran in "What's going on in h-... oh my G-d..." My father was in awe of what he saw. My mother covered her mouth, about to cry. My father held my mother tightly and started fanning her, "Don't faint dear, don't faint." My mother looked away from the tragedy and started crying. My other brother was still asleep, lucky him... When we all went back to bed I was lying there and I could hear my mother crying. I wish I knew what had happened. I really do wonder what happened because I never heard anything nor did I see anything either. The next morning was the hardest because we had to explain to Leon why Alex didn't come to breakfast. Alex was the only one adopted from our family, not that that meant anything, he was still a big part of the family. After we had Alex's room cleaned up from all of his guts we tried to continue on with our normal lives. That afternoon we were all watching T.V. when all of a sudden the T.V. just turned off. Okay something was definitely wrong here, all the lights started flickering. The T.V. screen went static and the T.V. started giving off weird sound frequencies. These frequencies were very high pitched. Eventually a picture showed up on the screen of the T.V. showed a right hand with a pentagram on it and it wasn't too clear but in the pentagram was a picture of what looked like a bull with pointy horns. The high pitched frequencies made everyone's ears bleed. It stopped but whatever it was wasn't finished... The T.V. unplugged itself and the cords grabbed Leon. "Luke, get the clippers!" My mother screamed. My father went and got the clippers it took him a while. My mother and I tried to unwrap the cords from Leon. Have you ever had a snake constrict itself around you and try to get it off? It was like that only about a hundred times harder. After about twenty minutes my father got back with the clippers. "What took you so long?" My mother asked frantic. "Well I'm sorry dear, my power tools were trying to kill me!" My father said. We cut Leon free. The room went silent... We here a vrooming sound... vroom vroom... it got louder... We all looked at each other... "Do you guys hear that?" Leon whispered. "Yeah... it sounds like- like a chainsaw..." I said. It kept getting louder when all of a sudden the blade of the chainsaw carved an eye shape through the wall... and then it just stopped and all the lights came back on... "Well I'm not going to sleep tonight... who's gonna stay up with me?" My mother asked. We all raised our hand. The next day we were exhausted but still on high alert. That day was perfectly fine, nothing weird happened in fact it was like the perfect day... everything went right... My father's director decided to not make him re-edit that movie. My mother got promoted at her job. And Leon and I got a day off of school. It didn't seem like anything could go wrong... and nothing did. It's almost as if whatever was going on before was trying to taunt us. But it was the next day that things got bad again. Everyone came home early due sickness, this wasn't your ordinary sickness this was 'There's something in my body that wants me dead' kind of sickness. My father was the sickest of all of us... in fact after a while he started coughing up blood... this sickness went on for weeks until my father just... died... After he died everyone was no longer sick... "What do you think is going on?" My mother asked. Leon looked at us with uncertainty. "You think this house is cursed?" he asked. Cursed... now that's an interesting word... cursed... "The diamond!" I said "Steven..." "No I'm serious, mother... did it not occur to you that all this weird stuff started happening after that diamond shattered," I said. My mother just stood there and starred into space... "Y-you're right." She said. I love it when things come together and they all of a sudden make 100% more sense... I felt a sting on my right hand. I looked at it and saw that a bar code had appeared on my hand the number was 1 that's it just a one... Everyone one had one as well only Leon had a 3 and my mother had a 2. I don't know what this meant, but hell... I'm number 1... "What the hell is going on?" My mother asked. "I'm telling you, it's that diamond, it's cursed," I insisted. "Mom... something's wrong with my skin... it's disappearing," Leon said. He lifted up his hands and there you have his skin was slowly disintegrating. My mother and I just stood there and watched... There really wasn't anything we could do. Whatever it was ate away at Leon's body. All throughout this process we had to listen to Leon screaming as this thing ate away at his skin, flesh, muscle and organs. All's that was left was his skeleton. His bones started moving around and eventually formed an eye. In addition to that a rip placed itself on each side of the skull as if acting like devil horns. "And then there were two," My mother said. "We need to get that diamond and try to fix it." I said. "Fix it?" My mother asked. "With what, Steven, glue? It's a diamond... it won't go back together. Whatever it is has damned us with a curse that cannot be lifted... And even if it could be lifted it's too late now. It's taken your brother's lives and your father's life. We're the only two left in this hell house" Never in my life have I heard my mother get so upset. "Also even if it was possible, me, having one eye to work with wouldn't be very helpful with pieces that small... depth perception is a must," My mother added. Even on that note we decided to give it a go. As we proceeded in collecting all the shards and gathering them on the rug they started levitating... We both got up and backed away a bit. The shards started moving towards my mother specifically. She continued to back away when one of the shards launched itself right into her shoulder. She started running as the shards quickly followed. Eventually she was back in the room that I was in... She was cornered... I didn't know what to do... but it was too late now... the shards, all of them, had been launched into her body causing my mother to bleed out and drop dead into her own puddle of blood. I think that was it, the shards had vanished and the spot where the diamond had broken now had a piece of paper on it with writing on it. It said "You are granted mercy... for now... but I will be back." This first-person reference of the use of "I" got me thinking that someone was behind all of this paranormal activity. Luckily I had tons of evidence of what happened so I could hopefully get a little input from someone that's professional on this kind of stuff. So I take pictures and take them to a guy that specializes in this kind of crap. I found out about so much stuff I didn't know, but yet there is still so much to be discovered about this weird activity and why the curse happened the way it did. Could it have been the spot that Alex actually found it? Could it have to do with the people or person that may have previously owned the diamond? I may never know... I'm just glad that I could live to tell about it... I just wish others could have too... |
