THE SEA SHELL MAN

By Theresa Manley

The sand moved intertwined with the waves lapping at Sofia's feet as she ran along the shore. Her mother close behind as they embarked on their adventure collecting sea shells along the sea shore. The more delicately elaborate ones lie just below the surface; which they dug up like pirates searching for buried treasures. The ocean waves sang a song as it lifted its watery hands to beckon them closer to the offering of shells it freely relinquished.

At home the man stood vigilante; awaiting the return of mother and daughter. His shell encrusted body reflecting the rays of sunlight piercing the window. He was almost complete; a shin and foot was all that remained undone. Two small pearls; his eyes reminded them of the last gift given. He was a monument to the father husband whose ship remained lost at sea.
