A SCREAMS contest entry. Chapter 5 of "My Neighbors the Strangers."
Jake finished his TV dinner and deposited the remains into the trash. He'd been holed up for a couple of weeks now and was starting to get antsy. He hadn't left his house since his last confrontation with the neighbors; that crazy-assed Darla and her formidable butcher of a husband, Dave. He would grant them this; they had managed to spook him a bit. Yeah, they were a little freaky and creepy but, they had messed with the wrong guy because Jake was a "BAADDD MAN."

Jake had grown up as a trust fund kid. After his father had died his mother changed and starving for love she clung to Jake in an obsessive way. Through his formative years and beyond his mother had been manipulative and wicked. Eventually she had crossed taboo lines and made him her plaything as well. This had left Jake with no marketable skills but, his mother had taught him things no boy should know at a young age. Jake did know how to identify and control damaged women. By the time he was done with them they were not just damaged, they were broken. Those that weren't broken were dead.

His mother had been the first. It had taken Jake some time to extract himself from her tentacles. He broke her and she died in a sanatorium leaving him with the bulk of the family fortune.

With little need for a career Jake traveled the world and made it his preoccupation to seek out damaged women that he could force his will upon. He had left a string of vacant eyed women; the list was almost as long as the list of raped and murdered ones.

He had made one mistake in all that time. Doris, his previous neighbor, she had been a beauty, not that beauty was a prerequisite. But, it never hurt to have a good looking toy.

He had traveled so often he hardly knew Doris and her husband Dan. Dan had been some sort of body builder who with steroids had changed himself into a grotesque character of a man. Dan's 'roid rages had done the damage to Doris that Jake always found so appealing.

Dan had been easy to dispatch despite his size and strength. Jake had yet to see a muscle that could stop a 9 mm hollow point slug. Jake had simply shot him through the heart. That done, Jake had dumped the body in the freezer in their garage and put no further thought to Dan.

Doris had actually been one of his longer relationships. He abused her body and mind on a daily basis for nearly three months. Most of his toys never made it past a couple of weeks, many never lasted the night. Jake never went to their house; he always had Doris come over to his at predetermined times and she never failed to show as scheduled. Just thinking of the perversions that he had submitted her to raised his blood pressure and got his juices going.

The fact that he had not visited her house turned out to be a fortuitous act. Jake had no knowledge that Doris had turned cannibal by chowing on her dead husbands remains. Jake could care less how she spent her time while she wasn't pleasing him. The only time that he went to Doris's house was the day she did not show. By committing suicide she put Jake in an awkward situation. His first thought was to leave her to molder and make arrangements to move. Instead he called it in like a concerned neighbor and had been under investigation for a long time but with no forensic evidence he had been cleared of any suspicion.

That had been a couple of years before and Jake had played it cool. There hadn't been any toys but the itch was on him now. The fact that Dave had verified his suspicions that Darla was unbalanced only played to Jake's strengths. He was now tired of playing the part of voyeur.

He had gotten away with it once before and it was time to feed his appetites. Yes Darla was damaged but she was also dangerous. That made it even more alluring and Jake was up for the challenge.

His mind was made up; he would have Darla as his next toy. He only hoped that he would be able to enjoy her as long as he had Doris.
