Below
Bird of night
Again
There you go
Upon the wind
Downward friend
Towards an end
Just as it seems
Just as happiness
Convinces us
That we
All have a chance
Again you appear
Letting us know
All too clear
There is no chance
None at all
We are doomed
Mired by our truth
Stuck right here
Upon pavement
Watching you rise
Admiring your fall
Wonder all the while
What could it mean
Could it be anything else
Or just what I suspect
How could this be
Is where I’m often left
Bird of night
Seen in bright day
Wings of pain
Spread out wide
Black pools for eyes
Raining down demise
I am right here
Again circumventing
Waiting
It’s not quite my turn
In fear
I’m forced to predict
Those so close
Must go first
Those so adored
Are taken away
Some are strangers
Others not so much
All are loved
By one or many others
All are needed
But such pronounced needs
Concern you least of all
Doing your part
Playing your role
The consummate professional
All creatures
Mortal bastards such as us
Should expect nothing less

Below
Bird of night
There you go
Upon the wind
Downward friend
Each trip you make
Nothing do you waste
Each time you retrieve
What death has commanded
Each time you return
Back from the clouds
Back from beyond the heavens
The effort to do either one
For you
Has become balanced
An equal madness of sums
An eye for an eye
And a life
To meet its death
All beginnings
Are meant to cease
Bird of night
Swallowing up air
As you land so very near
As you retrieve
What without question
You alone were sent
I see you there
I know why
While so many others don’t…
