Evelyn stood in the middle of what once was her beautiful family room, too shocked to fully process what she was seeing.
Moments ago she was rushing home from Alex’s, hoping to have time to shower before her husband got home. Not that he would be able to figure out what was going on, but it was just easier to not even go down the whole “where were you” road.
Those thoughts vanished quickly when she saw Dave’s car already in the driveway. She began bracing herself for the inevitable conversation, but those thoughts vanished even more quickly when she walked in and found herself in the situation she was still in right then; standing in a ransacked room.
No sign of Dave anywhere.
Then, just when Evelyn had begun thinking this couldn't possibly be more confusing, the sound of screeching tires outside the house pierced the deafening silence. She went to the still open front door and reached the opening just in time to simultaneously see her husband being thrown onto the front lawn from an open van door by what appeared to be several masked men, and something small and hard slam into the front of the house.
She gazed for a brief moment at Dave, who seemed to be ok. Evelyn then turned her attention to what turned out to be a brick with paper wrapped around it, that she guessed was meant for the window and missed. Desperate for any shred of information about all this, she pulled off the paper and read:
your address is 816. turns out our instructions said 618. sorry for the confusion
Evelyn simply stared at the note, reading it over and over, until the cycle was broken by Dave’s voice from behind her.
“I got off work early…where were you?”
