A short story about a farm and a man who works there.

Jonathon sat at his chair. He bit into his apple. He decided he didn't like it, he threw it over the edge. He heard movement and the occasional scream. They were so simple. They were like him... A much more basic form. A much more basic form of any of us he supposed. All he had for entertainment was unloading and reloading his rifle as any form of language was banned if you were within 20 metres of the pit. This includes books, games, even talking to other guards. Jonathon was a guard. He guarded a farm.
A few hours later Jonathon thought he should take a break. He took his leave and walked to the living quarters. Jonathon took his iPod from inside his mattress. He didn't trust people enough have it in the open. It was a safe move as you probably weren't mentally sound if you worked in his field. Jonathon was fine, at least that was what he told himself.
Just then another guard walked into the room. "Hey, do you know where the toilet is?". He asked nervously. Jonathon nodded towards a door on the other side of the room. As soon as he got comfortable he heard an electric buzz, his break for shift three was over. He put his iPod back and went to his post.
Jonathon walked over to the feed. He grabbed a sack. It normally just consisted of pieces of random meat. He knew it was just pieces of different animals. The crops were not fussy. It was always a struggle carrying the feed, Jonathon was never very strong. He never claimed to be, he never liked sports either. He chose this job because it gave him a lot of time to himself, also nobody were allowed to talk to each other half the time. As he was dragging the sack another guard picked up the other side of the sack. Jonathon nodded in thanks, they poured the random chunks of meat into the pit and heard the chattering of teeth and screams as they climbed over each other to get at it.
The crops always amazed him. Apparently they were barely sentient, believe it or not he had never seen what he was farming as the pit was dug too deep to see what was going on and there was always another shift of guards for when the crops were being transferred and used.
He slumped back into his chair at his post and continued switching the safety on and off on his rifle. He had become a expert at it, admittedly there were a few more useful things you could be doing with a gun. But he was good at turning the safety on an off.
Jonathon heard a buzzing noise at his post, this was a summon to the lower floors of the pit. He had never been down there before. He knew where the door was however. He was incredibly nervous as he started descending the many catwalks and stairs. As he was getting closer and closer to the observation room he could hear the chattering and movement getting ever louder, he noticed the shifting shapes in the shadows. His heart was pounding as he suddenly sprinted into the observation room. He turned to look through the window into the floor of the pit. Nothing... When suddenly the lights flicked on and exposed it all. He could see their feet, their rather skinny legs. Their very skinny hips, he could even see their ribs. He suddenly heard a baby wail out, he looked around the room. Nothing. He listened again and realised it was coming from inside the pit, that's when it struck him... They were farming Humans.
