Day 5 Entry (Family) - "The Baker's Dozen" |
Loveâs Legacy William glanced at his watch: 6:05. âCome on, Bekkah, weâre late.â His younger sister was struggling to get several packages from out of the back seat of the car. âWell, if youâd help a lady,â her muffled voice responded. âYouâre no lady, youâre my sister,â he said with a laugh in his voice but hurried over, taking two of several gifts from her overloaded arms. He began walking toward the house. âIt looks like Grandma is going to make out this year.â âAt seventy-nine, I think thatâs the only making out sheâll be doing,â he laughed. âEwwww. Now Iâm going to have that image of Grandma in my mind all during her party,â she squealed. âStill, Iâll bet she was something when she was younger.â âGrandma? Be serious!â William knocked on the door and then entered without waiting. Marie Jeanette Holcomb â MarJe to her friends â was sitting at the end of the dining room table. She was still a handsome woman, softened by age. Her striking white hair was topped by a cardboard tiara that said âBirthday Girlâ. âBilly, Bekkah. Youâre here! Now we can get this party started,â she laughed. The family proceeded to sing an off-key rendition of Happy Birthday. Their Dad, William Senior, brought in a big cake with seventy-nine candles blazing away. âHappy Birthday, Mom,â he said, setting it down. âMake a wish.â Several seconds passed as MarJe stared at the flames. âGrandma, make a wish and blow them out,â Billy urged. After several more seconds, he warned, âSomeoneâs going to call the fired department if you donât!â MarJe looked at Billy with a twinkle in her eye. âDonât rush me. Iâm trying to think of a wish better than having you all here with me.â This brought several âahhâsâ from the family. Finally, she took a deep breath and, with Billy and Bekkahâs noticeable help, extinguished the flames. After cake and presents, the family broke into conversation groups. MarJe motioned for Billy and Bekkah to follow her. She led them back into her bedroom and sat on the bed. âThose old folks will be gabbing until itâs time to go,â she chuckled. âI just want some time with you two. Time is one of those things that we never seem to have enough of,â she said wistfully. âOld folks?â Billy said, laughing. âIs that â what was the expression â the pot calling the kettle black?â Bekkah gave him a warning look and punched him in the arm. âI know you kids think of me as old but it wasnât always this way. In my youth â and that wasnât that long ago in my mind,â she informed them, âI was just like you.â Billy felt warmth in his cheeks. âI was just kidding about you being old, Grandma.â âI know itâs true. My bones tell me every morning,â she laughed. âGrandma, do you have pictures of you back then? Weâve never seen any.â MarJe got a big grin on her face. âFunny you should ask! Billy, in the closet on the shelf to the right thereâs an album. Would you bring it over?â As Billy went to the closet, MarJe looked at Bekkah. âYou look a lot like I did back then â much prettier, of course â but you can see the family resemblance.â âGrandma, thereâs a stack of magazines here,â Billy informed her. He looked at one. "Oh my gosh! It's a girlie magazine! Nineteen-forty,â he read aloud. He pulled another one down. "So's this one. Did Grandpa have a secret life we didnât know about?â MarJe burst out laughing. âThose arenât the pictures I wanted you to see,â she finally was able to get out. Both Billy and Bekkah stared at her, confused looks on their faces. âNo, Grandpa didnât have a secret ⌠those belong to me. Well, now that I think about it, I guess he did. You probably donât know it but I met him when I was nineteen. I was a model and he was the photographerâs assistant.â Billy opened the magazine. The centerfold was a photograph of a young woman posing in a field of flowers. In spite of the well placed shrubbery, it was apparent she was nude. The beatific smile couldn't hide the identity. âGrandma?â Now it was Billyâs turn to laugh. âOh Grandma, what big ...â âDonât you finish that if you know whatâs good for you,â she warned but there was a lightness in her voice. "There's a lot of magazines there." "It was a long courtship," she grinned. Bekkah went over and took the magazine. âGrandma. Youâre beautiful!â âI tried to tell you,â MarJe chuckled. âWell,â Billy teased, âI guess we have a surprise for the family, donât we.â âJust a moment, young man.â She picked up the album and took several pictures from the back. Holding them up, there were Billy and Bekkah in the all together as small children. âI have one more surprise for you. I have more than one-hundred friends on Facebook and since youâre both linked to me, I have access to all your friends as well.â âGrandma! You wouldnât âŚâ âYou keep my secrets and Iâll keep yours,â she laughed. Billy looked at Bekkah and nodded. Her grin was all the answer he needed. âDeal?â he said offering his hand. She opened her arms and they both closed in for a hug. âI love you so much,â Bekkah whispered. âin spite of your sordid past,â Billy finished, giggling. âBut, one more condition,â he said pulling back to look at her face. âAnd what could you possibly want?â âTomorrow, after school, Bekkah and I come back to visit.â He indicated the album. âI have a feeling thereâs a lot to learn about our wonderful, crazy,â he paused, âbeautiful Grandmother.â She pulled them both close in a love filled hug, hiding the tears that sprang to her eyes. âDeal,â she whispered. And thank you for granting me my birthday wish.
