Something Good

I wanted to dazzle my readers with something good
But nothing I wrote could be remotely understood

I’d like to be a literary genius, but it seems I’m lacking
In any form of skill with the exception of, well, slacking

Re-writing my main character to be a little less mean
Deleting what was supposed to be a steamy sex scene

Replacing the woman’s lover with a faithful hound
It seemed easier than writing about her fooling around

As for the plot, well it has everything you could want
It has good guys, bad guys, a Times New Roman font

There is murder, dancing, then things start to unravel
Admittedly I got a bit lost, when I added time travel

Deciding to leave out the circus, I had to keep the clown
They make great funeral directors, in a modern town

Sending my manuscript to some people for a review
I suddenly realised that something could be askew

The frowns on reader’s faces, now that can’t be right
They didn’t even laugh when the clown lost his sight

No one shed a tear, when the gardener lost his spouse
Brutally abducted by an alien, she was killed by louse

Some of my friends said “there’s potential there!”
But they were really saying, I don’t have a prayer

With every intention of writing a story that was first rate
Alas, I’m now using the old excuse of which the dog ate

So I re-wrote the whole story, removing all the crap
I figured that I’ll have this thing finished up in a snap

Finish it I did, but now I need to be somewhat frank
Because all I’m left with, is a page that’s simply blank

I’m back where I started, feeling quite misunderstood
Dreaming again, if only, I could write something good
