A humorous look at how words can mean different things to different people. |
*Breaking the Seal: Zelda was a feisty woman who could demand attention from the orneriest truck driver, despite her age and petite physique. She was having a difficult time trying to communicate with the driver. she asked me to check him out for her, since I was the guard on duty. She was about five foot two, short gray hair and a smile that never quit. The acrid odor of cigarette smoke followed her wherever she went. I was doing guard duty at a warehouse when I heard Zelda yelling at a truck driver. "Waz his problem, Jerry? I keep telling him to move to the dock, but he doesn't respond. Don't they teach them drivers nothing when they go to those fancy trucking schools they advertise all over. The truck driver said that he had a seal on the back of his truck" "A seal in the back of his truck," her eyes lit up rolling as she nodded incredulous. I was totally caught off guard when I realized she saw something totally different than I did, "Never have I heard anything like that I need to talk to Wanda., my supervisor" (Her eyes grow real big and through her arms up in the air. (She puts her hands out in front barking like a seal)"roaff, roaff!'! (I continue to keel over in laughter.) "Was that guy crazy or something? He certainly is not going to win the seal of approval from this company. He has a seal in the back of his truck. How does he take care of it?" (She finishes her smoke break and she goes back inside to talk to Wanda) "Wanda we need to get some ice and food. There is a seal in the back of the truck that just came into the back of the parking lot. Have you ever heard of anything so crazy?" "I will look into this (she has a grin on her face and shakes her head). I am glad you came to me with the news. After she comes back from talking with Wanda she comes to the guard house and continues to talk about the seal and what it needed in order to be taken care of, things like water ice and fish. Her supervisor came to me a few days later and told me Zelda genuinely thought there was a seal in the back and wanted to care for it. "Jerry I really knew what the seal was. You do not think I am that out of touch." Don't worry Zelda my lips are sealed. *Security seals are mechanisms used to seal containers in a way that provides tamper evidence and some level of security. Such seals can help to detect theft or contamination, either accidental or deliberate. Security seals are commonly used to secure vehicles, chemical drums, airline duty free trolleys and utility meters. |
