A poem to celebrate and understand a man of God who struggled with his Call.
Saul, Israel's King, A Man Under Fire.

The nation I belonged to was crying for a king,
All I wanted was a place that might link
Me to my lost mule who was lost in the crowd.
How was I to know I was soon to be called?

I was a tall man who stood out from the rest
Samuel was a prophet who said I was the best
man to choose for a leadership job.
You've got to be kidding I'm just a poor slob.

What choice did I have but to serve nation and God?
With choices like that, I said yes with a nod.
Then along comes a small lad David by name,
All at once I found myself in a win or lose game.

More often than not I would feel crazy inside
then along would come David to soothe and to guide.
How could God annoint him when I was chosen before?
I saw myself and all else as an ugly old boar.

It was a matter of time before I tried to feel power.
I sacrificed to God and Samuel did glower.
From that moment on I felt lost and alone,
With David my rival all I did seemed to go wrong.

I went to a fortune teller looking for hope,
Made a fool of myself she thought me a joke.
The rest of my days were nestled in gloom,
With my son Jonathan his best friend I knew was doomed.

All because I was looking for a donkey one day,
I met up with a prophet who had something to say.
He told me God chose me; how could I pass?
At the end of my life, I felt I was an annointed ass.
