I poem about living with a Bipolar Disorder.
Strike You by David Prisco

I’m depressed
That means there are many days when I cry
It doesn’t necessarily mean I want to die

I’m depressed
I have a chemical imbalance of the brain
It doesn’t mean that I’m crazy or insane

I’m depressed
That means there are many days when I’m sad
It doesn’t mean I’m going crazy or completely mad

I have an illness
Just like cancer or a bad heart
It doesn’t mean my whole world is falling apart

I have an illness
It doesn’t make me a bad man
Don’t judge me- especially if you don’t understand

I have an illness
With any illness comes sorrow and pain
It doesn’t mean that I have a defective brain

I have a disease
I have to take medication and pills
It doesn’t mean that I’m going to get a gun and kill

I have a disease
I am under a doctor’s care
It doesn’t mean I walk the streets in my underwear

I have a disease
Some days are better- some days are worse
I have a disease and I don’t have a curse

I’m sick
I am human and I am allowed
Even though I have done things of which I am not proud

I’m sick
I did not ask for this disease
But I have hope and faith that one day I’ll be freed

I’m sick
Go ahead and judge me because I don’t care
But mental illness can affect anyone so beware

I have an affliction
If you have questions feel free to ask
But sometimes it is hard to complete the simplest of tasks

I have an affliction
It hard to pick myself up when I fall
But it doesn’t mean I hear evil voices coming from my hall

I have an affliction
Depression is a terrible, terrible feeling
But it doesn’t mean I see little monkeys swinging from my ceiling

I have a disorder
Sometimes I need a friend- sometimes I need an assist
But it doesn’t mean I want to constantly slash my wrist

I have a disorder
Yes- I’ll admit – sometimes I wish I were dead
But that doesn’t mean I’m going to put a bullet into my head

I have a disorder
Sometimes it makes me lethargic and lazy
But just because I have depression don’t think I’m completely crazy

I have a disability
I suffer and need the comfort of a friend
But just because I am suffering doesn’t mean I want my life to end

I have a disability
I hurt and sometimes I feel like I can’t cope
But it doesn’t mean I’m stupid or I’m some kind of dope

I have a disability
I suffer with depression and there is nothing I can do
But Bipolar Depression is a disease that can affect anyone including you

I have a condition
I did not ask for this disease of the mind
But I have faith that I will get better in time

I have a condition
Everyone suffers from depression at one point in their life
But just because I’m Bipolar doesn’t mean I want to stab myself with a knife

I have a condition
One day I hope to be happy and free
Just remember that mental illness can strike you just like it struck me
