Conundrum

All day I’ve had this phrasing
running through my head,
I mean to say the words correctly,
but fracture them, instead.
Every time I’ve mentioned it;
tried to say the words complete,
My tongue twists it and it becomes:
the Agony of Victory and the Thrill of Defeat.

At first it made no sense at all,
but conscious thought came to the fore,
realized that coming out ahead
leaves you only wanting more.
And that thought is in itself defeat
as conversely odd it seems to me
sometimes just going for the gold
even without a prize, is victory.
