Hubby Mud

Thirteen hours at the daily grind--
beyond exhausted. But
awaiting me will be
a cup of my husband’s coffee.
I can smell it the moment
I come in the door.

He calls it mud. Freshly ground.
Earthy. Lifeblood.
Black Ichor Of Life: Ambrosian Black Silk
swirled with shaken milk,
hot, steamy caramel
sweetness and
I perk.

Infusion of caffeine: I’d consider an IV,
but I’d miss the aroma--
just brewed sunshine:
the essence of home.
Coffee: a smile,
flavored with his sense of humor,
enhanced by the fact
that he made it, delivered it into waiting hands,
mug warmed hands,
along with a hug.

No, it is a hug. Better, a kiss:
dancing over lips and tongue,
sweet and sassy: a strong bite,
erasing any need to brood.
Waking from the dregs of my day;
relaxing into the night.
Sure, I can make a cup of coffee.
But he makes it better.
