Today the northern sky was red.
Across the clouds a new sun bled.
Cityscapes reduced to ash
and the sand rained down as glass.

We heard it through the Twitter feeds
but none of us could quite believe
‘til the videos… but now we know
they won’t be coming back.

There’s a shrinking future with a frozen past.
It’s the same as before, but the scale's collapsed.
If there’s nowhere else you’d like to be,

Today the whimper will begin.
It’ll catch the breeze and ride the wind.
For months the dust will fill the skies,
Cobalt-laced to sterilize.

The men uptown are sharing thoughts.
They're drinking up their finest scotch,
racing Ferraris and taking safaris.
They won’t be coming back.
