Something crashes into Jake Schofields house.

I sat there in my dark room staring at that bottle of aspirin on my desk for what seemed like an eternity. Was I really going to do this? Well why not? My whole life I’ve felt invisible. My parents never paid me any attention. All they cared about was staying employed in this broken economy, even if doing so meant that they would have to sacrifice any kind of emotional relationship they would have with their only son. Yes, I’m an only child. Which makes matters worse for me because when my parents aren’t around (Which is all the time.) I’m completely alone. School isn’t any better either, because up there I’m a social outcast. I don’t have any friends, mainly because no one has ever tried to make conversation with me, and if I tried to take the initiative with someone, Id just be ignored. My grades in school aren’t amazing, and I’m not part of any team or club that would make people notice me by default. I’m just there. My games and my TV have been my only friends for 17 years. They could only entertain me for so long before I grew tired of them I guess. Nothing new or interesting happens in my life. My life has no meaning or any sustenance. Right now, I’m just Jake Schofield, another human being taking up space someone else may need. So why not swallow a bottle of pills and rid the world of my useless, meaningless existence? Who or what is stopping me? I grabbed the bottle of pills and snatched off the cap. I looked inside and saw what looked like a endless sea of capsules. How would I be able to swallow all of this at once? I sat the bottle back on the desk and got a glass of water. This should help. I picked the bottle back up and stared at it again. The water is warm. What if this doesn’t work because the water isn’t cold enough? I sat the bottle back down again and ran downstairs to the freezer to put some ice cubes in my glass of water. Perfect. I came back into my room and picked up the bottle. I should probably stretch before doing this. I sat the bottle back down and did some jumping jacks. Alright, lets do this. I grabbed the bottle with an intense ferocity and just stared at it again. What’s taking me so long? I want this. I know I want this. I took a deep breath and brought the bottle closer to my slightly parted lips. I could hear the pills move slightly within the bottle, as if they were preparing themselves for what was about to come. Here goes nothing. I opened my mouth as wide as the grand canyon and poured all of the pills that could fit into it. I threw the empty aspirin bottle on my bed and reached for my cup of ice water. I was about to take my first sip, when suddenly my room began to rumble. The movement was so great, that I fell and I dropped my glass letting it fall and shatter all over my wooden room floor. The rumbling stopped and there was a dead silence that took its place. I spit out the now dissolving pills on the floor. What just happened? I carefully got up trying not to cut my hands or bare feet on the shattered glass surrounding me. Was it a mini earthquake? A tremor or something? I walked toward my window and looked outside to see if I could garner a clue as to what just took place. Nothing. Everything outside looked normal. Just another Wednesday night. Maybe it was just those pills messing with my head. I turned my attention to the glass on the floor. I might as well clean this up before my mom gets home. I was headed toward my bedroom door when something downstairs exploded knocking me backwards into my room on my wall. I blacked out.

I opened my eyes and my room was moving in multiple directions. There was a loud ringing in my ear and I felt faint. I slowly slid up on the wall until I was on my feet. My head was pounding in unison with my accelerated heart beat. What is going on? I headed toward my bedroom door, which took forever because I was walking like a man who had been binge drinking for days. I got to the door and rested on the hinges. I grabbed my head. Everything was still moving around like I was on an acid trip or something. I turned around and threw up everything I ate that day and headed downstairs. I got to the top of the stairs and looked down to see a giant hole in my front room letting the moonlight beam in. I grabbed the rail to help me keep my balance while I carefully walked down the stairs. Did something crash through here? I walked toward the gaping hole in my house trying not to cut my feet on the debris. What in the world could have done this? Well whatever it was it completely obliterated the front door. I took another step and my foot plopped into something thick and slimy. I looked down and saw my foot was ankle deep in a blackish liquid that trailed all the way into my kitchen. I pulled my foot out of the blackish goo, with black strings stretching close behind. I slowly headed toward the kitchen, picking up a nearby bat as I inched closer. I stuck the bat into the kitchen first, then the rest of me. I turned on the light and saw another gaping hole in the middle of the kitchen floor. The black goo was running down into the hole like a river stream. I got closer to it and was greeted with an immense heat. I backed up and kicked some debris into it to see what would happen. Nothing. An asteroid. An asteroid must’ve crashed into my house. That’s the only logical explanation. God, how am I going to explain this to my parents if and when they get home tonight? And why aren’t the nosiest neighbors on the planet sticking their heads in here wondering what’s going on? I turned around and headed back towards the front room, but stopped when I heard a loud spatter behind me. I slowly turned back toward the kitchen to see where the sound came from. Nothing was there. I didn’t even swallow those pills! Why is mind playing with me like this? I didn’t think I hit my head on the wall that hard either. I was about to turn back around, but noticed something sticking up out of the hole in the floor. What is that? I stepped closer to get a better look and I couldn’t believe what I saw. There was a hand covered in that blackish liquid holding on to the edge of the hole. I backed up and tripped over some large debris on the floor. The hand was then accompanied with an elbow, then another hand, and then a head. I crawled backward, cutting my hands and feet on the debris covered floor, until I was through the hole in my front room and on my front yard. “Jake?” My mom said as she was getting out of her car. I just sat there in the grass still staring at the kitchen. “Oh my God!!” She screamed upon seeing her partially destroyed house. “Jake! What did you do?” I didn’t respond. My mom ran past me and began examining her house. “I knew leaving you at home wasn’t good for you! I knew this day would come! What happened to kids just having house parties? Now they have to destroy peoples homes?” She ranted. I was still in shock from seeing whatever that was crawling out of the hole in the kitchen floor. What was that? “Jake!” My mom grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet. “Jake? Jake are you ok?” I looked at her and back at the kitchen. The thing was gone. “Jake what happened here?!” She said in a panic while shaking me as if I was a rag doll. My nosey neighbors finally started to emerge from their houses. “You Schofield’s alrat?” Mr. Forester, (The nosiest of them all.) said while walking across the street. He was a short old geezer with a beard that looked like it was grown on moses and was white as snow. He looked like a malnourished Santa Clause that had been run over by a few cars. After his wife died and his children moved away, he doesn’t do much else but sit at home and monitor the entire neighborhood and its inhabitants. “I think my son is in shock.” Mr. Forester looked at me and then at the house. “Jesus Krest!” He yelled in his raspy southern accent. “What in ternation happened her?” My mom rolled her eyes. “Mr. Forester, I’m worried about my son right now! Could you please call the police or do something remotely useful?” “Sure thang.” Mr. Forester said before limping back to his house. James and Deborah Alberthina came over from next door holding each other while wearing cute, matching housecoats. They are one couple who are all about the way they are perceived. Everyone knows that Mr. Alberthina has walked out on his wife more times than Tiger Woods on a bad day. He was a good looking guy. Tall and fit with slick black hair I could never dream of having. He had more money than he knew what to do with, and he used words that would send a woman swimming in her underwear. Mrs. Alberthina, on the other hand, was less desirable. She was short and chubby, quiet, and you could tell that time had done a real number on her. She had also been having an affair with our other neighbor, Mr. Woods for years. One may wonder why they are even still married. At this point they are nothing but really good roommates, if that. “ My God! Mary are you alright?” Mrs. Alberthina started rubbing my mothers shoulder in a fake consoling manner. “No, I’m not. But thanks for asking Debby.” James Walked toward the house and stared at the giant gaping hole. “What in the world could have caused this? A meteor of some kind?” My mom looked at the house, then at him. “ I don’t know! Has anyone called the police yet?” She yelled. “Ill call them right now for you Mary.” Deborah said while pulling out her cell phone from her housecoat pocket. James walked over to me and snapped his fingers in my face. I looked at him, and then back at the kitchen. “Mrs. Schofield! I called the perlice, they should be her shertly.” Mr. Forester said as he limped back over the street. “Thank you so much.” My mom looked at me and placed her hand on my face. “Oh Jake, what happened?”

The police and paramedics arrived quicker than expected, especially for a Wednesday night in this neighborhood. Two police officers got out of their cars with their mouths stretched open at the sight of our house. “Holy shit.” One of them said while taking his cop-styled glasses off. “This is some stuff you’d see on the sci-fi channel.” The other joked as they walked over to my ecstatic mother. “What the hell are you guys joking around for?” My mom said angrily. “Calm down ma’am it just caught us off guard is all. Im Officer Talumn, my partner here is Officer Gruss. You mind telling us what the problem is?” My mom looked at him like he was insane. “What kind of a question is that?! Do you really need me to tell you? Are you blind?” Officer Talumn started motioning his hands in a, ‘please calm down manner.’ “Alright, alright. I just don’t have all the details.” My mom pushed me toward the officers. “My son is being unresponsive. Could you please find out what’s wrong with him? And while your at it, can you find out what the hell happened to my house!” “Ill take him over to the paramedics so they can check him out.” Officer Gruss said as he pulled me along with him. “You alright?” I looked up. “Hey, you alright honey?” It was the paramedic who was examining me. “Oh yeah, I-Im fine.” I looked down at the ground. “You know anything about what happened here?” She asked. I looked over at the house and down again. “No, not at all.”” Well it looks pretty freaky to me. You didn’t see any extra-terrestrials in there did you?” She laughed and nudged me in an effort to join in, but I just stayed silent. Officer Talumn walked over to us and started asking her about my condition. “He’s not in shock, just a little shook up. He has a few cuts and bruises, but nothing a bandage cant handle.” Officer Talumn thanked her and told her to give him a minute. “Hey Jake.” I didn’t respond. “You alright there buddy?” I continued to stare at the ground hoping that he would just walk away. “Listen, I just have a few questions for you alright?” I shook my head so he knew I understood. “I just want to know what you were doing in the house when, this, happened.” What was I doing? I knew I couldn’t tell him I was trying to kill myself because then he’d have me tied up and shipped off to some insane asylum. “I was just watching TV.” Talumn stared at me for a moment before going on. “Alright, do you remember exactly what happened?” “I was watching TV, and something exploded downstairs. I got up to see what it was and found giant holes in the front room and kitchen floor. That’s all I know.” The officer sighed and sat down next to me. “You sure that’s all that happened here? Your not holding anything back?” I looked at him and opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. I wanted to tell him what I saw. That there was what looked like a person crawling out of the hole in my kitchen floor. But I knew he wouldn’t believe that. I wasn’t even sure if I did or not. “You were going to say something?” He looked deeply into my eyes as if he knew they were holding back information. “No, I-I’m not holding anything back.” He sighed and got up. “Good to know.” He walked back over to my house and the paramedic came back over. “Cops, they never know to talk to people.” She said while pulling out her box of bandages. She held out her hand. “Im Mandy.” I looked at her hand confused. Why was she introducing herself to me? “Your name is Jake, right?” I looked at her, and then took her hand. “Yeah. Jake Schofield.” She smiled and started cleaning my cuts. “That’s a nice name. It fits you.” I smiled and then turned my attention to the house. “It’s a miracle you didn’t get severely hurt in there you know.” She said in a serious tone. I just stared through the hole at the dark kitchen. “Yeah, I know.”
