A group of girls get dared to stay the weekend in the haunted house and disappear.
“This lunch food is so gross,” said Lily Burns.
“Oh come on its not that bad….. It could be worse.” I said. “Anyways let’s get back to the sleepover plans” I said. “I think we should get a scary movie to watch and stay up all night”
“That sounds like fun,” Kayla Holloway said.
“I can’t wait for this weekend! It is going to be a lot of fun!” I said. “Do you know if you can come this weekend?”
“I know I can,” said Lily. “Me too,” Kayla said.
Alexis Lander said, “Me three”
“I can too,” said Tiffany Morgan.
“I’m not sure. I will have to talk to my parents. They want me to help clean around the house this weekend…. I hope I can,” said Erica Underwood.
“Aw… I hope you can to. It wouldn't be the same without you” I said.
“I’m pretty sure I can come I just have to double check with my dad. He shouldn't have a problem with it,” said Jillian Haswell.
“Great! I cannot wait! Are your parents going to be home?” Erica asked.
I said, “They will be home most of the day. They might leave sometimes, but they won’t be gone long.”
“ OK, then my parents should say yes,” said Erica. The bell rang for us to go to our next class.
“We can talk more about it later. Bye,” I said. We all left for class.
All of my friends think of me as a nice and fun girl. I’m the most popular girl in school. I am the head cheerleader and I coach the little kids for cheerleading and basketball. I have blonde hair and blue eyes. I am skinny and short. I live in a big house with a lot of space. My family is rich and has been for a long time. I live in Illinois with my dad and stepmom. I am planning to have a sleepover with a bunch of my friends this weekend. My parents always say yes to me. I am an only child so I normally get what I want. Most popular girls are girls that are mean and don’t have a heart. I’m not like that. I’m nice to everyone….. besides this one girl. She hates me for no reason. Brittany Mathews does not like me. I didn't do anything bad to her. She always gives me dirty looks and always says mean things to me so I try to ignore her. I have algebra 2 with her next period, and we are partnered together for the project… that will be fun.
Now I’m in algebra now. I don’t have any close friends in that class. I went and sat down. Then I see Brittany walk in the room. She comes and sits right next to me. We sit in silence then out of nowhere she says, “So I hear you’re having a sleepover with your friends.”
I said, “Yeah how did you know?”
“I overheard you talking about it at lunch,” she said, “is it at your house?” I said, “Yeah it is.” She said, “What if I dared you to stay in the haunted house down the street from my house for the weekend. Would you do it?”
I said, “let me think about it um………. NO!” she said,
“What….. you to chicken? Aw look Sophia is a little chicken!” “Sophia’s a chicken, Sophia’s a chicken, Sophia’s a chicken!”
I said, “Alright we will do it! Now would you shut up already?!” She just sat there laughing. I don’t understand why she likes to do that. It is frustrating.
“I will meet you there with Morgan on Friday, OK?”
I said, “ OK, we will be there. Are you two staying with us?” She said, “Yes, I want to make sure you don’t leave.” I said, “Well we won’t so you don’t have to worry about it!” that was the end of the discussion.
Later I met with my friends after school. We sat outside and it was a little bit chilly. It is October so it is pretty chilly. I was a little nervous to tell them. I have heard that there have been multiple murders in that house. They were people dared to spend the night in that house. I have to just come out and say it. I said, “Hey guys I have something to tell you…….. about the sleepover…. Um…. Well it is not at my house anymore.”
“Then where is it at?” said Kayla.
I said, “um……. You know the house at the end of Brittany’s street……… well it is there. Brittany kept ca-”
Everyone yelled, “WHAT!!!!!!!!!!”
I said, “I’m sorry. What else was I supposed to do? I would rather stay in the haunted house then get made fun of from everyone for who knows how long! Wouldn't you?”
Kayla said sarcastically, “Yes…. I would rather stay in a haunted house where people have been killed than get made fun of from everyone!!! That makes perfect sense!!!”
“I’m sorry…… bu-” I didn't get to finish my though when Brittany and Morgan came through the door.
Brittany said,” I hope you aren't thinking of chickening out…… chicken. You won’t even make it through the evening without saying you want to go home. Hahaha” She laughed as she walked away with Morgan laughing with her. That girl gets on my nerves so much. I wish she would go to a different school, but I know that that won’t happen anytime soon.
As I walked home I passed the haunted house. Walking past it made a shiver fun down my spine. I’m not looking forward to this weekend anymore. I’m scared, but I can’t let people see me weak. Then I will look scared and people don’t like weak people. Then they don’t look like leaders. I am know to be a leader and do not want to change that. When I finally got home I told my parents that we changed the sleepover to Lily’s house. I knew if I told them what I was really doing they would say no. they just said be safe and don’t do anything stupid. I love when they say stuff like that. They always joke around with me.
On Friday after a long day of school everyone but Erica met Brittany and Morgan at the haunted house. The house obviously has been there for a long time. Most of the brown paint on the porch has chipped off and the brown siding has almost completely fallen off. The grass hasn't been cut in months and the flowers are covered with weeds. Brittany said with a big smile on her face, “Are you guys ready to go inside?” We all hesitated but we all said we were ready. “Sophia first” Brittany said with a grin on her face and Morgan’s. I got to the front of the line and we all walked up to the house slowly. Someone had their hands on my shoulder and they were shaking. I think it was Tiffany. She was shaking so much.
The door opened on its own when I got on the porch. It made a loud creaking noise. Once we all were inside the door slammed shut. We all let out a little shout. Lily tried to open the door, but it would not budge. Once we found the light switch we turned on the lights. It would be a nice house if there weren't cobwebs everywhere. The carpet was brown and the walls were painted dark green. All the furniture is old. They look like they were from the 80’s. There were spiders on the wall and bugs. It smells like someone died in here. There were a few strange sounds coming from upstairs but nobody else paid attention to them. There were chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. In the living room, right but the entrance way, had a fire place and right above it was a giant picture of a man. I guess it was the man that owned the house.
After about 15 minutes of silence Brittany said very sarcastically, “Well this is going to be a fun weekend.” I said, “Why don’t we go in pairs and look around the house. Then we can tell each other what we say so we can get better knowledge of the house.”
“Is… um is that a good idea,” said Morgan.
I said, “Yes I think that being in pairs would be better than being alone. So Morgan will be with Brittany, Lily with Kayla, Alexis with Jillian, and Tiffany with me. Is everyone ok with the groups?” Everyone liked their group so we didn’t have to bother about changing the groups. Brittany and Morgan went upstairs with me and Tiffany and Alexis, Jillian, Kayla, and Lily stayed downstairs. We decided to regroup again in 20 minutes to make sure everyone was OK.
“Do you think everyone will come back when we regroup?” Tiffany asked. You could tell by the way she said it that she was really scared.
I said, “Yes I think everyone is going to come back. Nobody is going to be hurt or gone.” That made her a little relieved. Tiffany is one of those girls that don’t say much but worries a lot. You can see it in her eyes when she is stressed and worried. You can see it in her big brown eyes right now. As we walked around I felt like I was being watched. Every step we took was being watched. It was weird because when I looked around there was nothing there. It was so quiet I decided to say things to make her feel better. I said, “So how was your day at school?”
She said, “It was OK I guess. I knew I was coming here later so I tried to do all my homework and have fun….” Her voice got real quiet. “…..Just in case I didn't come back.”
I said, “You are coming back. We all are. There is no reason that we would not come back. We will all be at school on Monday unharmed.”
She said, “So how was your day?”
I said, “I had a great day. I got an A+ on the English test we took the other day. I had lunch with my best friends. And it was just a great day.” I turned to look at her and when I turned around she was gone. My heart started racing. Where could she have gone too? I walked back into the rooms we were just in to see if she was looking at something but she wasn't there. I called her name like 20 times, but I never got a response. I started to panicked. I am really worried. It was time to go back to the entrance to make sure everyone was OK. What am I going to say….. What am I going to do?
When I got back the first thing I noticed was everyone else had their partners but me. When I walked down the stairs alone they all just stared at me like I was a monster. Brittany said, “Well what did you do you Tiffany?”
I said, “I didn't do anything to her.”
She said, “Then where she is?”
I said, “I don’t know. We were walking around upstairs through the bedrooms and bathrooms and talked about school. I was talking and when I turned around she was gone. I went back to the rooms we were in to see if she got left behind and she wasn't there. I can’t find her.”
Lily said, “Why don’t we all go as a group and search the rooms they were just in. there might be a clue to where she disappeared to.”
I said, “That’s a good idea Lily. Let’s hope we find her”
We all walked up to the stairs together then we searched the first bedroom, the master bedroom I’m guessing. The room did not have any clues in it. I can’t even imagine what happened to her. Lily said, “I wonder what happened to her.” She sat on the bed.
I said, “Yeah me too. I hope it is nothing bad.” All of a sudden we hear a laugh that came out of nowhere, then like two seconds later Lily disappeared. There was a big cloud of smoke where she was standing when I looked over. She was gone. No clue to where she went. I think everyone is scared now. We all run down to the entrance and try to open the door. I say,
“We can’t leave. Lily and Tiffany are missing. The right thing to do is try to find them.”
Morgan said, “Yes so the rest of us can disappear to. I want to go home. I was to see my family and friends. I didn't think I would go missing. I don’t want to. I’m going home.” She tried to open the wooden door but it wouldn't budge. She tried and tried and tried but it wouldn't budge. We all tried to pull together but it wouldn't move an inch. We decided to give up and eat. We all brought food to eat. I brought cookies, Brittany brought drinks and pizza, Morgan brought cereal, Kayla brought bread and peanut butter, Alexis brought chips, Jillian brought salsa, Lily brought popcorn, and Tiffany brought pretzels. We all ate in silence. Everyone couldn't stop thinking about what happened to Tiffany and Lily.
After we finished eating it was about 10:30 so we were thinking about going to sleep when Jillian Said, “Someone should keep watch. Just in case whatever took Tiffany and Lily come after us while we are sleeping. If they do whoever is keeping watch can scream to wake us up.”
I said, “That is a good idea. Who wants to take watch first?” nobody volunteered. I said, “Well I guess we will have to pick a number. I will think of the number and whoever guesses the number farthest away has to stay up first. We will take turns watching for about two hours.”
Brittany had to make things difficult so she said, “Why do you get to pick the number. I think I should.”
I said, “Well I was the one who was having the sleepover when you dared us to have it here that’s why I am picking the number. You can pick any number from 1 to 30.” My number was 6. I asked, “Kayla what is your guess?”
She said, “7.” Then I asked, “What about you Jillian?”
She said, “15.”
Then Alexis picked 24, Morgan picked 19, and Brittany picked 29.
I said, “My number was 6. Brittany you were furthest away so you watch first. After about two hours wake up Alexis and have her watch. Then Morgan, then Jillian, then Kayla, and I will watch last.”
Brittany said, “NO FAIR! You probably picked a number after I picked mine so it would be furthest away.”
I said, “Stop acting like a child. I picked 6 before I asked Kayla for her number. Now let’s get ready for bed.” We all got out sleeping bags ready, got in out PJ's and brushed our teeth. One we got in our sleeping bags I fell asleep
I was woken up by someone screaming. It sounded like Jillian’s scream. When I woke up it was about 6:30. Jillian’s turn to watch. When I sat up Jillian was nowhere to be seen, but all the other girls were there. “Where is Jillian?’ I asked.
“Nobody knows,” said Alexis.
I asked, “Are there and marks or clues left behind?” Nobody answered so I got up and started looking. There was nothing. I don’t understand. Normally there is some sort of clue, but there was nothing. This is frustrating. Nobody went back to sleep. We are all afraid. We would have left by now if they weren't missing. I hate Brittany for doing this. This is her fault. To get that off our mind we ate breakfast, cleaned up, and got dressed.
“What should we do now,” asked Kayla.
I said, “I guess go around the house all together and search every room until we find a clue. Room by room. We will start right her. Then go around the first floor then go upstairs.” Everyone agreed with it so we started searching. Inch by inch until we found something. Sadly we didn't find anything. The next room we searched was the living room but one again didn't find anything. The last room we searched on the first floor was the kitchen. When Kayla walked into the pantry she let out a scream and disappeared. We all went into the pantry nothing happened. We left that room and went to the entrance way to eat lunch. We all ate in silence. We are missing three people so far. Who is going to be next? I hope we find them. I really want to leave but the right thing to do is find them.
We cleaned up our mess and worked our way upstairs. It was so quiet. I want to start a conversation. So I said, “How did you guys do on the math test we had the other day?”
Brittany said, “We don’t want to talk about it. We know you will just rub it in our face that you got a better grade than us.”
I said, “No I just wanted to start a conversation…. geez” that was the end of that. When we got up stairs we started searching the office. Alexis went to open a draw and a puff of smoke appeared and she was gone. We all screamed. We are all scared now. There are only three of us left, Morgan, Brittany, and me. We searched the next room, a bedroom, in silence. Morgan went to open the bathroom door and when she turned the handle the floor fell out from under her and she screamed. Brittany and I looked in horror as she fell through. We both ran down stairs to see if she was on the floor. She wasn't anywhere to be found. Brittany and I just looked at each other.
She said, “You know this is your entire fault.”
I said, “No it is not. You were the one that dared me to do this with my friends. I didn't want to be made fun of for not staying the night in a haunted house.” After a few minutes of silence I finally said, “Why do you hate me? Why do you always try to make me look stupid?” she didn't say anything for a few minutes.
Then eventually she said, “I’m jealous of you.”
That shocked me to hear that I said, “Why would you be jealous of me?”
She said, “You the most popular girl in school, you have a lot of friends, and you get everything you want. I don’t I’m not that popular, I don’t get what I want, and I don’t have as many friends as you.” We sat in silence.
A few minutes later I said, “Well if you were nicer to me I could help. I wanted to be your friend nut you were always mean to me and I didn't know why. Can we change that?”
“Yes we can.” She said with a huge smile on her face.
“Let’s think about how everyone was taken.” I said. There is not any connection to why they disappeared. Tiffany was just listening to me, Lily just asked a question and sat on the bed, Jillian was just keeping watch, Kayla went into the pantry, Alexis was going to open the draw, and Morgan tried to open a door. This makes no sense. There are no connections. No reason they disappeared. I said, “Can you think of anything?”
She said, “Well they are connected in some way. Maybe the places they tried to go to were secret and nobody has seen them and whoever owns this house doesn't want anyone to see them.”
I said, “Wow I never would have thought of that, but what about Tiffany and Jillian? They didn't try to go anywhere.”
She said, “Well what if Tiffany walked where a trap was set, but I don’t know about Jillian. Maybe she did something the owner didn't like and wanted to get rid of her. They have to be somewhere in this house. The question is where.”
I said, “Why don’t we go to where everyone was taken and try to do the things they did without actually doing it. We will use some tools from around the house to try to open the pantry door, the draw in the office, and the bathroom door. We can find something heave to put on the bed. If something opens, like a trap door we can throw a note down to tell whoever is down there to make a lot of noise so we know they are there.”
She said, “That is a good idea. What heave thing can we use?”
I said, “how about this um…….. this heave box.” She thought it was a good idea.
I said, “Let’s find some paper and a pencil to write the note.” We found paper and pencils and wrote many notes saying, this is Brittany and Sophia. We need you to make a lot of noise from where ever you are so we can find you and help you get out from where ever you are.
The first place we went to is the bedroom where Lily sat on the bed then disappeared. We threw the box of heave things onto the bed where Lily sat and a trapped door right where she sat. We threw the note down and took the box off the bed and the trapped door closed. Within a few minutes we heard a bunch of noise. We walked around the house looking for some way to get to where they were. We couldn't find anything. We were walking through the hallway to get to the kitchen when I accidentally knocked a big picture off the wall. There was a door knob behind it. We both looked at each other with scared looks on our faces. I said, “Do you want to open it?”
She said, “No thanks. You can do it.” I looked at the door knob and put my hand on it and turned it. The door opened without any struggle. There were steps. I walked in front. We went down slowly. We didn't know what to expect. As we walked down the stairs the noise got louder and louder. At the bottom of the steps there was another door with a lot of noise coming from behind it. I didn't hesitate at all. I opened the door and behind it was everybody else. They were all OK. Nobody was hurt. We went around hugging everyone. We all walked back up stairs. We didn't want to say in the house so we packed up our things and went to my house. We all discussed what happened. The all fell through a trap door in the floor and landed on a bunch of pillows. There was nothing down there but pillows. They sat there doing nothing waiting for us to find them. It was a good thing that Brittany and I worked together to find them. Now we are going to be best friends. I’m so glad we worked together. I don’t know what would have happened if we didn't. We don’t ever have to do that again, but the good thing about the haunted house sleepover is that I figured out why Brittany hated me and we fixed it. Now we are good friends. I learned that even though you think someone doesn't like you the person might just have a good reason, like Brittany was jealous of me.
