Sixteen-year-old Lotti Lowther can’t seem to make it through a day without getting in trouble from the Steam-master for things she never did. All because she spotted him stealing food, and he refuses to get off her case.

She decides to escape from the underground world of the Steel Crypt – the only home she’s ever known. But her plans are shattered when her best friend is murdered for carrying the lethal rustplague. Now Lotti is accused of spreading the virus, capable of killing everyone who lives in the Steel Crypt, and is sentenced to death.

With no chance to prove her innocence, Lotti flees from the homunculus programmed to take down anyone infected. She has no intention of dying and bolts into the upper lofts to hide where she stumbles upon an exit door to the outside world. Lotti is convinced she’s safe, especially after meeting someone she knows from the underground–Nate. When she discovers the rustplague has spread to her brass heart, her world crumbles. But Nate reveals he has a cure for the disease. So Lotti is compelled to rescue those left in the Steel Crypt before everyone she knows is killed off, even if it means her own death.
