Tuck her into bed
Stay until she’s fast asleep
Slip out very quietly
Try not to make a peep

Look in one last time
Through the bedroom door
Knowing when she wakes
She will be transformed

Growing by the moment
Her blond hair turns to brown
Soon she’ll dye it black
To turn your smile upside down

Your mind will often wonder
Where the fair-haired child has gone
Or if this raven head will prove
You’ll reap what you have sewn

For many years you will place
Her above all else
And she too will also think
Of no one but herself

In the end you’ll realize
You did this just the same
Then you’ll call your mom
To tell her you’re ashamed

Mom will say I know
I made this phone call, too
Just give it twenty years
Then she’ll be calling you
