Last week I dreamed I was looking from the second floor over an old-fashioned, whitewashed produce stand. On a table beside it was a vividly purple cylinder standing on end, looking like a fat stick of chalk. As I examined it, something emerged from a small opening in the top. I thought it might be a butterfly or a moth, but it was a ladybug that parted its shiny shell and flew away. I picked up the resinous purple stick and painted my eyelids, pleased that I’d found a natural eye shadow. When I saw my naturalist coworker, Beth, beside the stand, I told her about the ladybug and the stick. She promptly explained the entomological significance of my observation.
The next morning at work I saw lying beside the check-in station a magnetic bookmark with a photograph of a ladybug on lush, purple petals.
