INT.MYERS' HOME-KITCHEN-DAY 8:00am and Josh Myers and Mary Myers eat breakfast at the dinning table. They chat as they eat. JOSH Ah, I almost forgot. Gwen and her husband would be coming home for dinner today. MARY Really? Oh that’s wonderful. It’s been a year since we last saw her. JOSH I set the time at 7:00. Is that ok with you? MARY That’s fine. I have all I need so no going to shop for groceries. JOSH (says and exits) Alright, I’m off to the golf pitch. See you later. MARY Bye. EXT.GOLF PITCH-DAY Josh and three friends walk towards the pitch chatting. Meanwhile, some green grasses watch them from afar and discuss them. SYLVIA (angrily) Look at them, those stone-hearted imps! MONICA Oh no, not today too! EVANS Why don’t they leave us alone! Why do they keep walking over us? MONICA Only if there was something we could do... Finally, the men reach the field and Josh places a bowl on the grass and kicks it with his stick. The ball flies and falls upon a group of grass youngsters singing at a gathering. They abruptly shut up and the seated guests all scatter like fowls. 5 minutes later, one of the youngsters rises but in a moment another ball flies over it chopping of its head. INT.MYERS’ HOME-KITCHEN Mary chops a chunk of meat on a chopping board. Beside her in a bowl are two big onions. The onions chat in silence. STEVE She’s going to chop us up in the same way... RUBY Only if you let her... STEVE How do you mean? RUBY Prove to her you’re an onion. Splash your juice into her eyes and she wouldn’t touch you again. STEVE Yeah, that sounds great. Thanks! Moments later, Mary picks up the male onion and starts peeling him. He splashes some of his juice into her eyes and she immediately drops him and flies out of the room. STEVE (hurries to her) You’re right! It worked! RUBY Quiet. It’s not over yet. You have to think of... Mary enters room suddenly wearing some goggles. She picks up Steve, places him on the chopping board and chops him quickly with a butcher’s knife. Though he splashes some of his juice into her eyes it only lands on the surface of her goggles. Ruby is next to go. She trembles as the knife draws closer to her and abruptly jumps off the board but she cannot go far as Mary quickly picks her up and chops her too. EXT.GOLF PITCH-DAY 5:00pm: a group of young men in singlets and shorts run up and down the field playing football. They destroy many sleeping grass families by stepping on them. INT.MYERS’ HOME-KITCHEN-NIGHT The visitors dine in silence with the Myers. INT.KITCHEN-NIGHT Hours later, a group of tomatoes chat among themselves. JOAN What time is it? PATRICK I don’t know. Shall I check? JESSICA No, I’ll. Jessica slowly descends from the bowl and walks to the door but it’s closed. She returns to the group. JESSICA It’s closed. JOAN Too bad. By now, the others are at the park listening to the solution to our woes. EXT.PARK-NIGHT A small congregation of fruits and vegetables discuss the solution to their woes with a male orange as leader. Among the gathering are bananas, oranges, pineapples, onions, beans, potatoes, yams, plantains, cabbages, and lettuce. LEADER Brethren, the secret to our safety lies within us. Crowd murmurs. LEADER By giving of the stench in you! Humans love it when we smell good. On the contrary, they hate it when we smell like rotten eggs. SHE ORANGE We would die if we rot! CROWD Yes! She’s right! LEADER Silence! No one is suggesting you do so. All I’m saying is that you pretend to be rotten. Give out a foul smell so no human or animal would touch you! HE PEAR (to crowd) That sounds like an excellent idea don’t you think so? Crowd cheers. EXT.MARKET PLACE-DAY A female orange seller puts some oranges into a basket for a female customer. Suddenly, the customer complains about a foul smell. The seller checks around while the customer sniffs the oranges. CUSTOMER What’s that smell? SELLER (sniffs around) What smell? CUSTOMER (sniffs oranges) Ah! It’s the oranges, they’re all rotten! Customer empties her basket and runs away. Moments later the other sellers cry: My tomatoes! They’ve all gone bad! My watermelons, they smell like dung! My potatoes! Oh God what happened… INT. MYERS’ HOME-KITCHEN-DAY Josh smells a tomato while seated at the dinning table. MARY I don’t know what’s happening. All the vegetables have suddenly developed that smell. JOSH Throw them all away. We can’t cook with them. MARY Of course I know that. Now we have to take canned foods. JOSH Not for long. I’m certain the government would come up with a solution to it. The room is fully packed with shoppers. An old woman wearing glasses adds a bottle of tin onion to her almost-full shopping basket. EXT.PARK-NIGHT The small gathering of fruits and vegetables meet again. They chat and chuckle. SHE PEAR I was abandoned in the street after my buyer smelled my stench. She didn’t even take her basket! Ha! Ha! Ha! Others chuckle. Suddenly, leader orange talks. LEADER I’m joyous myself because my family and me can live to see another day. HE MANGO They are now relying on our brothers in the tins. LEADER Don’t worry. Soon they will run out of canned foods and would quickly give up the impish ghost… Crowd chuckles. INT.MYERS HOME-LIVING ROOM-DAY Mary sits in the sofa sipping a small box of pineapple juice and viewing the news on the set. NEWSREADER Following the horrible odour emanating from crops recently, the government has ordered the nationwide spraying of farmlands. So far 150 farms have been sprayed since the onset of the exercise this morning… Mary beams. EXT.ORANGE FARM-DAY Helicopters spray some liquid onto the orange plants. The oranges wipe their faces on the leaves of the trees while coughing. EXT.TOMATO FARM-DAY Tomatoes act in the same way as the oranges. INT.AGRICulture MINISTER’S OFFICE-DAY Minister smells a watermelon fruit. Seated before him is a young farm officer dressed in simple clothes. MINISTER It seems the smell is gone. I think it’s edible now. Cut it up. OFFICER Yes sir. Officer cuts fruit into two vertically and on a board before him. Immediately, he rises off his chair looking terrified. MINISTER (rises) What’s wrong? OFFICER The melon…it’s got green juice… MINISTER Let me see. Minister backs away on seeing it. MINISTER What the hell is that? Get it out of here! Officer runs out with it. EXT.DUMP SITE-DAY A truck pours down a large mixed quantity of fruits and vegetables. They cough. SHE POTATOE Too bad we ended up here. HE ONION Well, at least we are still alive. SHE PEAR (says coughing) Not for long, we can’t survive here. It’s pure garbage. Moments later, a 7-year-old boy draped on tattered rags visits the dump and picks a fresh-looking banana. He peels it and immediately throws it away frightened by the green fluid over it. The other bananas and fruits laugh when they see this. But the boy returns to pick up a pineapple. MAMA PINNEAPLE Hey, where’s he taking my baby to? DAUGHTER Don’t worry he’d bring him back. MAMA PINNEAPLE He better…imp! INT.COMPOUND-BOY’S HOME-DAY Boy washes pineapple in a bowl of water. He places it on a bench and starts peeling it. Immediately, he leaves it and backs away, seeing the green fluid on it. After a moment, he picks it up and washes it with water then chops it. The fluid doesn’t show up again. As the boy enjoys the chopped fruit, his mum comes by carrying a basket on the head. BOY’S MUM Where did you get that from Paul? BOY A friend gave it to me. BOY’S MUM How come it isn’t as green as the others? BOY I washed it with water and chopped it. INT.MINISTER’S OFFICE-DAY Boy appears in room wearing a faded white shirt and blue jeans, knee-length shorts. He sits before minister and cuts apart a tomato. He washes it into a bowl of water so the green liquid disappears and chops it on a board and puts it into another bowl. He shows the chopped fruit to the minister who eats a piece and smiles. EXT.PARK-DAY Lots of tables fill the place. A crowd sit before them eating: chopped oranges, potatoes, bananas, pineapple and others. Others dance to music. Behind the crowd is an empty space where some young men and women wash and chopped fruits and vegetables for some waiters to send to the guests. A young lady washes a lot of halved apples in a basin. Afterwards, her assistant collects them into her basin and chops them into bits. THE END |
