Sometimes your closest friend is your shadow. Flash fiction.
I glanced down at the emptiness beneath my feet. Well, at least it was only meant to be a glance; instead, my eyes lingered, the light in them vanishing like the flame of a candle before only the disappointing plumes of smoke arise and conquer the mind. How could something so similar to the insensitive person that I am be so absent? You mimic every place my foot falls upon, and you are only extinguished by yourself. The closer I get to the shining light, the stronger you become, taller than I could strive to be, more powerful and hungry and eager to stretch out and devour. Still, even with the amplifications that you are capable of, you do not utter a word, or even try to escape. You are my best friend, loyal and always around when my sun is smiling upon my face. Silently, you intertwine with me, dancing and playing until it is time for bed. It is in the night that I am always alone.
My feet still rest in the same place, mourning the soles of their missing links. The moon patiently tends to her children, the stars. She counts them and pays no mind to my friend. I wish that she would.
Maybe she'll take to her horizon sooner, so that I could waltz again with my comrade. Maybe she will come to terms with her sister Sun, and quickly awaken my other half.
Still, the darkness drowns me as my silhouette swims around until morning. I need her to realize my need for her following.
For without my shadow, I am but half of a person.
