Sophie inherits a ranch & decides to go and figure out the mystery. Hoping to survive it. |
Sitting quietly at a library table filled with open books and notes scattered between the young pair. The girl’s phone began beeping again causing her to look at it with a fierce face. She thought after the last time it went off her mother would have gotten the picture that right now was just not a good time. Grabbing it quickly she chucked the phone back in her bag, promising herself that she would deal with it later. Jeremy just gave her a strange look, receiving a roll of her eyes and a shaking her head, hoping he would realize it was nothing of importance. Anything from her mother was usually of no importance at least not to the girl her mother on the other hand thought mostly anything was between life and death. The buried phone let out muffled beep signifying a left message of some sort. Groaning, Sophie kept writing her notes not caring to make eye contact with the boy who would probably be looking at her. “Not going to check?” Jeremy finally asked after Sophie refused to make eye contact. Irritated at the question she snapped before calming herself. “Does it look like it?” Pausing herself for a moment calming down already feeling sorry for the irritation and sudden lash out. “It’s just my mom, probably nothing.” “She’ll just keep calling,” he spoke in a singing song voice causing Sophie to smile letting go of the last bit of irritation. “You know this how? You don’t even know her.” Sophie chuckled bringing her head up and finally meeting his eyes. The piercing blue eyes that made her go a bit weak in the knees, producing butterflies in her settled stomach. “True, but I’ve been listening to you for weeks ranting about her and her annoying ways.” Jeremy sighed not that he minded he actually thought it was funny at times, as he made sure to tell his girlfriend that. “A guy that listens,” smirking slightly, “what shall I do with you?” leaning forward across the table. He met her half way giving her a simple peck on the lips. The kiss came across so light that it made it a simply sweet kiss. “That seems doable.” Sophie smiled and went back to her notes, making sure that things never went to a place where it could get to far at least not where other people were. The simplicity of the action makes everything in her life that much better the fact that someone in her life actually paid attention to what she preferred. “Hungry?” Jeremy asked suddenly. “Sure.” Sophie was beginning to get a bit hungry. “Great.” Jeremy began packing up his things, handing over to her the notes he borrowed from her. He had been copying some of them down something that he had been doing for quite some time. “Head out and get some pizza?” “Um, pizza doesn’t sound good. What about Tony’s?” Sophie suggested again. “Yeah, that’s fine I guess. Next, time though no Tony’s please. This will be the third time this week. Sometime I would like to be able to take you somewhere else so people don’t think I’m always cheap.” “Only what I know matters,” Sophie threw her bag over her shoulder, and began leading the way out of the library. Jeremy followed quickly behind. Throwing his arm over her shoulder there, he gave her a quick squeeze. Sophie giggled as he whispered a few things in her ear. “Fine, fine, I will call her.” Pulling her phone out Sophie checked her text message of course from her mother simply said ‘call me’. Another two voice mails both from her mom saying the same thing, call when she got a chance. Her mother was completely over dramatic at times. Her mom knew she would be at the library least she could have done was tell her what she needed. Dialing her mother’s number she walked through the door Jeremy held open for her. “Hey mom sorry missed your call earlier. I was in the library.” Sophie paused. “Well, I’m at Tony’s with Jeremy, can it wait?” Sophie waited patiently for her mother to finish talking. The look on Sophie’s face made it known that plans were about to change. “Yeah, mom I will be home in a few minutes. I’m across campus from my car.” Sophie hung up. Jeremy was standing waiting for Sophie to finish up, before he asked what was up. Before he had a chance to ask, Sophie spoke, “Jeremy, I’ve got to get home.” “Sure. Is everything okay?” “Not really sure, mom said something about my Aunt Di. However, not exactly sure what, she was kind of rambling, wants to talk about it in person. There might have been an accident of some sort.” “Okay, yeah let’s get going. I will drop ya off at home. Then later we can come back and get your car.” “You sure?” Sophie asked and Jeremy simply just nodded his head. The walk to his truck was a lot quicker than her walk across campus to the car would have been. “I really need to remember to start parking over in this lot.” Sophie stated. “Then I will have less time with you.” Jeremy joked as they made their way to Sophie’s house she rambled on about her Aunt Di for a few minutes. Her mother never said much about her other than she was an odd character but very warm and funny. Aunt Di had some strange ideas and believed in lots of the new age mumble jumble, still she was her mom’s older sister and that would never change. Always blamed Sophie’s great Aunt Mary for how she acted. She always talked about ghosts, spirits and everything like that. Sophie knew she came from a very strange family, mostly the women. Almost all the women showed some signs of craziness, except the ones married in. She began to feel sorry for the people in the family, either way she was sure it was something to look forward to as she got older. Her mother seemed normal enough at least she hoped, either way it made for enjoyable stories, especially when family actually gathered for a family function. “Sophie, want me to come in?” “No, that’s alright. Thanks for the ride home; I will have someone take me to get my car later.” Sophie smiled. “You can call me. I will be happy to come and get ya.” “Okay, later Jeremy.” Sophie gave him a quick kiss, dragging herself out of his truck. She hated to have to go home they never get to spend a lot of time together with their school schedules and work. It seemed crappy but they enjoyed the few minutes they got together. Sophie noticed Emma’s car in the driveway too. Looking at the clock on her phone, Emma should have still been at Cheerleading practice. Something had definitely been going on if her mom called Emma home. “Mom, I’m home.” Sophie threw her bag down on the bench inside the door. “Sophie, honey, we’re in the kitchen.” Her mother did not sound very good almost as if she had been crying or something, not a very good thing. Sophie headed to the kitchen where she heard voices or her mom and Emma talking. “What’s going on? What’s up with Aunt Di?” “Well, we haven’t gotten much information on her exactly condition. It looks like she suffered a heart attack. She’s in critical but stable condition.” “Okay.” Sophie did not really know what else to say. “Well, there’s more. She was showing one of her friends something at the ranch. The friend she was also had an accident and she passed away. No one knows what happened out there but they don’t think foul play.” Her mother tried to keep strong while she spoke but Sophie had a feeling she just wanted to cry. “That’s terrible. Why were they at the ranch?” “No idea. Luckily, she had a GPS on her phone. She dialed out 911 but no one was on the other end. They were using the tracking on it and emergency service found them out there near the house.” Sophie sat back in the bar seat, trying to process it all. Something just did not make sense. Her aunt rarely went out to the ranch or at least that is what she says and never does she take people out there unless they are perspective buyers. Not often, enough as Sophie’s mom would say. “Oh, okay.” Sophie finally spit out. “We are going to fly out tonight. There’s a 7:30 flight, it gets us in late but I’d rather get there tonight then tomorrow. I want you to stay here with Emma and Kipper.” “Okay.” “Everything should be fine. If anything goes wrong, I will call you. I hope that we will have some more answers when we get there. The nurses just do not give much information over the phone. At least nothing that makes sense. Emma, please listen to your sister while we are gone. I hope that it will only be a few days. If I have to stay longer, your dad will come home early. I know you guys are responsible enough but honestly I just hate to leave you by yourself.” “No problem mom. Just let me know if I can do anything more.” Sophie grabbed a banana from the bowl while Emma and her mom talked over something, Sophie just thought over what her mom told her. Her aunt was never sick, perfectly healthy, even did the whole herbs thing, natural remedies. Something had to have happened to cause such a heart attack. Emma must have been done with her conversation as she hit the counter and stormed out of the room. “What’s her deal?” Sophie asked her mom as Emma left. “I told her no about staying at Ashley’s while were gone. Ashley can come here, but not to go over there. Her parents come and go a lot I’d rather just know where she is. You will make sure no parties right, including your own. Okay?” Her mother asked with an accusatory voice making Sophie roll her eyes. It happened one time and now her mother makes sure to lay down the law every time. “No worries.” Sophie smiled at least tried to, Emma was not the worse but Ashley never helped the situation. Honestly, they were old enough to know better that they did not need to look after all the time. Kipper however would need to be under constant supervision. The family’s Jack Russell terrier was a little terror all on his own hated to be alone and always made sure they knew it. Sophie called and told Jeremy of the news, he was very sympathetic about it all and made sure she had everything she needed. He was planning on dropping by after his late afternoon class to pick her up to get the car. Worked for her she was in no rush. Preferred that his coming over would wait until after her parents would leave. Emma was preoccupied with missing cheer practice that she spent the time in her room. No sooner than her dad walked in did they say there good byes. Her mother was in a hurry to go. Leaving some emergency cash, they headed out the door. Her mom was spitting out instructions as they backed out the driveway. Dad mentioned calling when they landed. However, Sophie was not sure what hospital Di was at. If it was serious then she was probably in Denver. She would have to remember to ask when they called. |
