When the stars carry you away
Several years ago I got up around 4:00 am to see what was supposed to be one of the most amazing meteor showers ever seen in many years. Believe me, it did not disappoint! The night was perfectly clear and it was a new moon so the sky was as dark as it could be. There were thousands of "shooting stars" in every direction in every part of the sky. It almost felt like a religious experience. I grabbed a reclining lounge chair and watched in wonder and a funny thing happened. I started to feel like I was at one with the whole event. A very calming sense took over and I began to share the feelings of the many generations over the past hundreds, thousands, or millions of years as they probably watched the same event themselves. I started to feel a unique understanding of things that I'd never thought of before. Don't ask me what I was thinking. It was just a feeling. It was one of those feelings like I was right where I was supposed to be at that moment doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. I was witnessing a very unique event experienced throughout the ages. Then I had this thought. What if we could pass knowledge and events along from generation to generation like hereditary traits! Imagine how much we would know and understand about ourselves and our world and universe. No more mysteries! Pyramids solved! Evolution solved! Easter Island solved! StoneHenge solved! The Mayans disappearance solved! But then there could be a dark side. There could be family secrets better left forgotten. Fortunes gained at other people's expenses that ruined lives and caused heartache and sorrow. Next time I have an opportunity to witness an event like a meteor shower again I'm going to take a lighter approach. I'll still lay on the reclining lounge chair but I'm going to get my iPod, put on the entire catalogue of Pink Floyd, and think of nothing!
