This is a poem I wrote about leaving home to go to college in Peoria, IL.
Growing up from the Red Brick

Knees quiver slightly,
even remembering what it was like.
To leave the little village,
just as the sun fell to night.

The focal point...red brick,
just a blur in the rear view.
Metaphorically and literally on the road,
to start anew.

To develop a new life,
a new comfort, not theirs, but mine.
Trying to hold back tears,
but it was scary, so I cried.

Reaching the land of too many vowels,
where everyone was just a he and she.
Soon they would become names,
so I began by by unpacking me.

Time has since past,
yet the feelings sometime uprise.
I grew up a little,
or maybe a lot, the day I arrived.

I left crayon-colored memories
back at the red brick and the dawning sky.
I moved to my adulthood
and left my childhood behind.
