Poem entry for "The Writer's Cramp" Contest |
Confession to My Older Brother My brother dearest, I hope you’re well This letter’s overdue, But remember back when dear ole mom Went racing from the room? We followed her into the street To watch our sober mother Lose inhibitions drastically And turn into another! She spent that night in drunken fit Spinning cartwheels down the way, And knowing she would never drink Dad thought it was foul play. I tried to cover up the sin, But dad was so much quicker. He grabbed her cup, before I could And screamed “in here, there’s liquor!” Too late, a spark had now been lit And mom had found her purpose. She packed her bags and soon was gone To join the flying circus. Dear dad was crushed, his joy was gone And in his mind he knew. You were the culprit of this crime And said “You’ll get your due!” He banished you into the void With only bread and water, And then began to pamper me As his beloved daughter. You fought, you cried and you denied Any part that you had in it. But dad held strong and did not bend The assumption that you did it. I didn’t speak and watched you suffer Thinking soon it’d all blow over, But as the months and years flew by I never could grow bolder. The guilt now finally weighs too much, And so I’ll jot this note. To let you know, after all these years It was I who spiked her coke.
