Flash Fiction of Allied Soldiers trying to break out of a POW camp?
We are breaking out of this POW camp tonight. Before we can do that however, I must retrieve these schematics from these blasted Nazis for one of their buildings so we can blow it up. That’s where I come in. I’m both a saboteur and a sniper, so I am used to having to fend for myself when confronted by the enemy. The high-ranking prisoner here, Colonel Hollis, the man who is leading this operation, felt that it would work best if it were a solo operation, as the more people who try to sneak into the Nazi base, the more likely it is that we will get caught.
I monitor the outside guard’s patrol. He seems to walk ten paces to the left of the door, and then ten paces to the right, towards me, each walk in either direction taking about thirty seconds. That is not near enough time for me to sneak past him. I have to either distract him or take him out. I decide to just shoot him. Why sneak past Nazis when you have the option of taking them out?
I drag the body behind the bushes so other patrols will not easily find it. I cautiously enter the building. I hear the loud, angry-sounding German voices coming my direction. I open a supply closet and wait for them to pass. Once the voices have faded, I continue down the hall. The plans will be in an envelope on Colonel Schneider’s desk. I head that way, towards his office, using my senses to avoid detection. My friends are counting on me. I let out a breath.
I reach the colonel’s door. I hear no voices. I cautiously knock on the door to see if there is any reply from inside, ready to bolt if someone is in. I hear nothing. I turn the knob, only to find that the door is locked. I let out a sigh as I reach for my pick so that I can play with the lock.
I feel something touch my head, and hear the click of a gun.
“Get up,” the heavily-accented German voice bellows. I cautiously get up. “Now turn around,” the same voice says again. I comply, only to find a whole squadron of troops facing me down. We must have been set up. Colonel Schneider walks up with a handcuffed Colonel Hollis immediately behind him with a gun trained on his head.
“I’m sorry, Billy,” Colonel Hollis says with a pitiful look.
“You really didn’t think we’d just leave plans like that laying around?” Colonel Schneider let out a maniacal laugh and then gave the order to—

“Tommy! Billy! Boys, cake is ready!”
“Oh, cake!” we all shout as we let Tommy Hollis’ new toy guns drop to the ground. We’re going to get cake!
