Nicole consoled Mia, but she couldn't say what lessons really lay ahead.
Mia threw her coat on the recliner. She plopped down on the couch and began to sob. Her mother approached and her gentle hand reached out and stroked her hair.

“What’s wrong, baby?” Nicole asked.

“I didn’t get the part. Jenny did.” Mia sniffled.

“You tried. It’s not the end of the world. Not everyone can get a part. The director has to choose which one they think is best. Perhaps you could try for another part?”

Mia sat up, her eyes swollen, puffy, and red. “But I was the best. They only picked Jenny because she’s pretty. I’m ugly. That’s why Mrs. Fairley didn’t pick me.”

“That’s not true.” I’m sorry child. Your mother isn’t the best looking either.

“It is true. I’m the symbol of ugly. My picture is next to it in the dictionary.”

“Don’t talk like that.” Even if it’s true. It’s a lesson you’ll have to learn.

“I might as well put on a beard and glasses. No boy even looks at me.”

“Then those boys don’t know what a sweet girl you are.” It’s just the way it is. Beauty is the way of this world. Unfortunately, even if you are nice, guys will always fawn over the girl with the golden locks, the perfect skin, and great curves.

“I try to be nice, Mom. They just don’t look my way. I’m just not very pretty.”

Oh, Mia, my child. You may not be pretty, but there is so much more to life. I wish I could cry the tears for you. That’s a gate you have walk through yourself. I truly hope that some boy will see the beauty within and ignore the acne and oddly-shaped body.

Nicole reached up and caressed Mia’s cheek. Her fingertips wiped away a few tears.
