Above the city’s harbor, there is a crescent moon
It smiles through cracked windows
Jumps on the buildings’ rooftops,
Swims in the murky water
Laughs loudly and remembers.
Above the city’s castle the moon sits like a child
Pretending to be king
Flirts with shadows of ladies on the broken walls
Defends the castle against invaders that do not come
Then grows tired and falls asleep.
Through the streets of the city the moon floats
Pretends to be someone, someone who is late
Someone’s father, someone’s wife, someone’s son
Enters abandoned buildings as if someone was waiting for it
Then jumps on the sky and is gone.
Through the starry skies the moon dances
Leaving behind the dark street, leaving behind the walls,
In a court of stars she now resides and reenacts stories of old.
Singing to them of men, of children and of gods,
Of nations and power, of history and gold.
The stars seem to smile and remember
But it seems the beasts cannot
The beasts that alone now run and hunt and praise her
Now that the race of man is no more.
