This poem is about my grandfather who fought in WWII
The Aftermath Casualty

For time is past due now
To speak the words I feel
To hold you in my arms one last time
To imagine you are real

All the hearts you've touched
You leave so much behind
Your loyalty to our country
The precious memories in our mind

As you spoke of past accomplishments
Your talk had gone so far
For hidden in a box among the rest
A Purple Heart, a Silver Star

The past memories of your life
Linger deep inside
The guilt you have carried
You seem to always hide

You lived the terror
Carried the fear
The war has long past
But in thought it's still here

It is you who knew the tragedy
The ordeal captured within
You never forgot the ones who were lost
The horrible deaths, the war to win

The casualties you suffered
Nothing you can do
The thoughts in your mind
You thought it should have been you

Then was then, but now is now
Friends and family all so dear
Seems those thoughts outweighed the love
Damn the war, you'd still be here
