I had enough of the beatings. I saw my way out, but would I regret that decision?
The patter on the window reminded me of that night. Rain speckled the pane. Occasionally, a drop would combine with another and the weight would pull it down. The water would streak down the glass and dissolve into the glazing. It’s curious that blood does the same thing.

As a matter of fact, that evening started right here…

The intense pain ripped through my body as Matt smashed his fists into my ribs. My jaw already had multiple bruises and cuts from previous blows. I sucked in an agonizing breath and braced for another impact that thankfully never came. Two broken ribs already made it miserable to even move.

“You piece of crap,” Matt screamed. He breathed hard and glared at me as I lay crumpled on the floor. That’s when he grinned with some perverse satisfaction.

“Matt, you’re going to kill me. Please, please stop,” I begged. I didn’t know what else to do .

“I’ll take that $100 you spent out of your hide woman. You think you can take my money like that?”

That smirk. God I hate him. He beats me. Maybe I deserve it. Maybe I am worthless. I shouldn’t have taken that money, but I really needed clothes. Maddie needed clothes. What are we suppose to do? Jerk.

My eyes wandered to the corner where Matt’s hunting rifle leaned. He pushed me to the floor when I tried to get up and that’s when something inside me snapped. He turned toward the kitchen, and I held the gun in my hand. The stock felt smooth. It surprised me how powerful it made me feel. When he entered the room, he had the same smirk as before.

“You’re going to regret this .”

Truth told, the only thing I really regretted was never telling Maddie.
