More prose than poetry.
The world is ours

We pile into the car, careful not to forget the directions from mapquest,
even though the words and numbers of the exits
mean nothing to us

We are on a mission to find a new escape to another raw ending,
and though we bow our heads in shame,
we break the rules anyway

The exit is right in front of our eyes;
the town already far behind,
and we're driving until we reach the city skyline

My hands tremble along the steering wheel as your street approaches
I feel so connected to the smell of the air here,
so different but more calming than home

In circles we drive forever,
trying to escape the web you've woven me into,
but there's no way out of this nightmare

The city suffocates us,
shielding us with a blanket of despair
and we know,
the city will burn tonight will your empty eyes

My head spins with a wave of emotions
and I can hear the siren call of my grave
marking my way back home

You reassure me with loving arms
allowing me to lay my head over your left breast,
as I start to believe this is all a dream
and that when I wake up
you won't be holding me so close

For a second, I don't care
that this could be the last time we're together
or that I know you don't love me
the way I wish you did

and we're running to the edge of the world,
while leaving our footprints behind,
watching the clouds drift between the sun and the sky

But the world is ours
and we failed but we tried,
to fill the void we run from
when inside our hearts
we know
we are never alone
