TRANSLATOR’S NOTE ON THE TEXT
Secreted inside a thinned-out hollow high up along the southernmost edge of the tenth and last stonewalled holding cell comprising Clonmeleagh Prison Barracks West Wing, the survival of this loose-leaf, tied with shoelace clutch of faded hand written papers, does itself astonish.
Hastily scribbled-in Irish-Gaelic, encompassing six full entries over six successive days, this ‘Jail Journal', as our presumed author ‘Fin’ throughout calls it, unlike other similarly entitled prisoner-kept diaries or journals, reveals little about his brief time spent as prisoner. Instead, the focus falls on the period immediately leading up to his imprisonment, for, as Fin himself, setting out his purpose later in the text, explains ‘Somewhere hidden among these handful of days the key to my better understanding what impulses and actions brought me here lies … to where only one certainty remains, that soon, I too will rest’.
This then, is Finn's journey.
