Fantasy tale about a boy who is orphaned and turns to crime and is whisked away somewhere |
This book has taken a while to write (2 years so far !!) and it's only on the first chapter although the rest of the book is pretty much structured. I have thought about ideas and finally got myself into actually doing something so have been writing it between all the other stuff I do !! I enjoy reading books especially fantasy books but favourites include the discworld series, Zagor Chronicles (not a widely known series from Ian Livingstone), Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Think a little of all these come through in my writing but we will see !! |
The moon is bright in the sky above the streets of London's Theatre District. On one side of the theatre you have the bright enthusiastic theatres tempting people in from the bustling streets to play them their tales of fictional bliss. This is not where our story starts though as we have to look at the other side of the theatre front and look behind the curtains and dressing rooms. Down in the back alleys and smoke smeared lights is a person shrouded in a cloak. They look round and before laying a little package on the floor of one of the doors of the theatres staff entrances. Whilst laying the package a ladys voice can be heard whispering a small prayer. Once settled on the floor the woman raps loudly on the door of the theatre and quickly runs away into the night. After the woman has gone the door opens with a bellow 'What the hell are you doing and why are you.........., the manager of the theatre stops short and glances around to see who was knocking on the door. After a couple of seconds he hears a small noise and looks down. Again the noise comes and this time he recognises this as a babies cry. He picks up the baby from the floor and cradles it in his stocky hands and looks around. In the distance he sees a flash of green but no more so decides to take the baby out of the cold and try to calm it. Once inside the Manager goes to his office and lays the baby on the desk. He opens the shawl and finds a letter and a necklace along with the baby. He carefully remove the note and picks a letter knife from his desk. As soon as the knifes tip touches the letter an alarm sounds. The manager looks at the time then realises that the show is about to start. He places the letter on the desk with the baby and starts to put on his jacket whilst anxiously glancing at the baby pondering what he can do. He gathers some old clothes he has and places them in a deep drawer on his desk and as he lays the baby down the door knocks and one of the make up artists comes through. She looks over and says '2 minutes Mr Welling'. He looks at the baby and back at her with an idea in his mind. He beckons her in and tells her 'Bex, I need you to look after this baby until I return from the show, please forget all your other duties and concentrate solely on this'. With that he rushes out of the door running down the corrider so he is ready to welcome the guests to his theatre house. After he has left Bex moves across the desk and looks at the baby wondering where it has come from. She sees the note on the desk and she opens it reading for a very short while before picking up the baby and saying 'Well Hello Steven how are we today, I believe this belongs to you' and holds up the necklace. The door opens again and Mr Welling returns to see Bex holding the necklace and the baby and stops in the doorway. Bex hasn't seen Mr Welling return as he watches her cuddle Steven and singing him. He waits for a while watching adoringly as she soothes the baby before louding coughing and closing the door behind him. He moves over towards her and she whispers to him 'I think he's called Steven and he needs to be looked after' as she passes him the note. Mr Welling looks down and reads the note 'Victor Welling, Please Look after him - StEven'. As time passes Victor brings Steven up as best he can utilising Bex for much of the time when they are in the theatre. The tight corriders and costumes racks are not much of a place for a baby so as Steven grows he learns to venture further out and explore the old theatre. He begins to look down unused storage corriders and finds more and more creaky doors and tunnels which not only run through Victors theatre but through to others as well. It was one day when Steven was down one of these corriders he heard Bex talking to Victor. 'What is going to happen to the theatre ? Steve is too young to have the responsibility of it and in your condition you can't possibly fund this for much longer.' 'We shall have to just wait and see' says Victor 'What more can we do we have to get money from somewhere and I am the only person who can bring that money in' They then hear a loud bang and turned to where Steve had just hammered the wall with anger. He realises his mistake and runs off through to the make up room as Bex comes through the door to see him sitting in a chair in front of the mirror trying to put a wig on. She laughs 'And what do you think you're doing ?, Just like your father you have the flair for theatre!' and with that she walks off. As Steve places the wig he hastily whipped off the make up table he thinks to himself 'How can I help ?' To help him think he goes back into the secret tunnels he's found and wanders around considering what he can do to help. As he moves slowly through a crawl space through to another theatre he stumbles across a shaft of light coming through the tunnel ceiling. He looks through and sees an office but not of Victors but of the owner of the theatre next door. He waits for the owner to go and slip in using the handy secret floor board in the corner of the room (the same as the one in Victor's). |
