A poem about longing to be back in the ocean, where i belong |
Longing For The Ocean I long for the ocean with its water so blue, I remember peaceful times, spent there with you The waves crash on shore bringing peace to us both It was there in the sand that we wrote our oath An oath of friendship, one not to be broken All the while ‘tween us, not a word was spoken We lay together in the days’ warm sun When it finally went down, we were not done We clung to each other never wishing to part We had things to do, didn’t know where to start The night brought a chill that neither could bear We tried staying warm, impossible out there The next morning found us still out on the beach, Lying there quietly, not safely out of reach The tide had ebbed, leaving us far behind A merman and mermaid, on the beach confined No water around us that we could swim away in We couldn’t walk, just lay there alone, when Someone found us, took us away in their car Dropped us off in a building, the beach was too far They study and probe us, calling us fakes, If they had their way, we’d be their next steak We try to speak, but all we do is croak Without water around us, our throats act broke We’re wondering what’s next, oh here’s a new truck And in to the back we are tightly tucked We bounce and jostle for the road is not smooth I know that later, your tender skin I’ll sooth Suddenly there’s a crash, and I hear men swearing Then a sickening feeling, for we fall, how daring! Sweet water engulfs us, again we are home We’ve fallen in the ocean, swept up by the foam The people aren’t so lucky, it seems they can’t swim We both glide over, rescue the two of them We push them along until they are safe ashore We hear talking of us, that we’re just folklore Now we are free once again in the sea For mermaids belong in the ocean you see Their mermen with them, away we both flee Frolicking along, as happy as can be Jim Dorrell 8/2/10 40 lines 367 words |
