I am Number Four

There are things we learn when growing old that’s hard to teach our youth,
respect for life and sharing love and always speak the truth.

“I am looking out for number one,” we often hear them say,
but on their knees to thank our Lord, we seldom see them pray.

“Dog eat dog and I am first,” a phrase they often use,
to place themselves above the rest, they never think to choose.

The best advice to them I give, with love and even more,
I have learned throughout the years, that I am number four.

In my life our God comes first, for the beauty of creation,
and for his son our blessed Lord, no thoughts no hesitation.

With God’s love and sacrifice and constant help and giving,
and with his Son to guide the way, my life is well worth living.

Number two, I do declare, for everyone to see,
tis the reason for my life, my blessed family.

There may be times of strife and toil, when they put me to the test,
but with their love and gentle help, they put my mind to rest.

What shall I list as number three, whatever can it be?
There’s one more thing above myself, my blessed country.

I have bled on battlefields and fought the lonely fight,
and when I see my glorious flag, I know my cause was right.

Now at last I come to four, the one I seldom see,
for those who wait in baited breath, number four is merely
me.
