the poem dwells on the fact that faith, hope and courage may even tame the wild tides
The dark waves lolled forth,
The schooner as if it were a toy.
The splashing water, like boiling broth,
Robbed the crew of it's joy.

Yet still he held onto the ship,
Untouched by gloom and fear.
Though the lightning cut the sky like a whip,
Though the disdain he'd stoically bear.

Not a gleam of shimmering hope,
Not a silver ray of light.
The crew feeling lonely and broke,
Silently groping through the night

But then,a miracle it seemed
As the captain knelt on his knees,
The bright moonbeam suddenly gleamed,
The storm was taken over by gentle breeze.

Some say mercy was shown by him,
Who controls the tide and rest...
The storm was but his whim,
To put the crew to test.

But the wiser know it's partly true,
And rest fantasy's share,
That faith, hope and courage can construe,
The turmoil into zephyres fair.
