A guide on how to make a successful comedy film. |
Having trouble writing your own comedy? Don't have any clue what is funny? Well, don't panic here are a few pointers that will help get your creative juices flowing. 1. Pop-culture references Audiences love pop-culture references, therefore try to cram as many as possible into your comedy. Most moviegoers can't relate to intelligent humor, nor original humor for that matter, but they do relate to random pop-culture references. Look at Scary Movie 4, it grossed nearly 41 million in its opening weekend and it's nothing but a series of pop-culture references stitched together. Audiences can't get enough of comedians spoofing their favorite movies and television shows. In fact, often a comedy doesn't even need to spoof it's reference, just copy it word for word. In an episode of the much beloved TV Show Family Guy, the Griffins break into a word for word rendition of "So Long, Farewell" from The Sound of Music; the writers didn't bother altering anything because they knew that the reference was automatically funny by itself. What works for Family Guy should work for you! 2. Fart Jokes If one of your pop-culture references should fail to elicit laughter, then throw in a few fart jokes for good measure. The audience might not understand one of your more obscure pop-culture reference, but a fart joke is universal. It is a given that at least a third of your audience will laugh at well placed fart joke. 3. Unnecessary celebrity cameos Celebrity cameos will always get a few laughs or at the very least amuse the audience. Audiences always get a kick out of playing "spot the star" while watching a movie, so give them what they want. NOTE: Practically any celebrity will work. It does not matter if they are at the prime or bottom of their careers, audiences will respond the same regardless. 4. Create a catch phrase No comedy would be complete without a catch phrase that audiences will quote to death months after seeing your movie. Be simplistic! A catch phrase should consist of one or two words, three might be a little too much. 5. Hot, naked chicks Throw in at least three of four nude scenes involving hot chicks and your film is guaranteed to draw in a huge male audience. Make sure the hot, naked chicks have less than two lines, because their voices might be distracting, thus destroying the illusion. Follow these five steps and you are guaranteed to have a hit comedy on your hands. Next week: How to Write A Successful Horror Film |
