A poem for urban african american men. |
Every day is a struggle, When you’re a black man from the hood. The odds are against me no matter what, Even when I’m doing everything a good man should. Trying to stay focus, And exceed everybody else’s expectations. The devils always trying to test my faith, But I’m blessed with the strength to fight the power of temptations. I got a family at home, And the bills are piled high. I can get either a job or hustle, But I don’t want to flip burger and I’m too young to die. I’m trying not to stress, About life and its frustrations. The devils always trying to test my faith, But I’m blessed with the strength to fight the power of temptations. I love my girl with all my heart, And now I’m slowly regaining her trust. I messed up in the past, But I’ve changed and doing everything, we discussed. We’re working things out, And have better communication. The devils always trying to test my faith, But I’m blessed with the strength to fight the power of temptations. Some of my old friends used to be a bad influence, So I had to subtract them like math. I got my mind right, And now I’m on the right path. I’m determined to do right, Even if it requires me to be in isolation. The devils always trying to test my faith, But I’m blessed with the strength to fight the power of temptations. The law is steady trying to find a reason to keep me down, And I refuse to let them throw dirt on my name. Because I’m determined to make parents proud, Of the man I’ve became. The police won’t get me in the system, Because my family helped me build a strong foundation. The devils always trying to test my faith, But I’m blessed with the strength to fight the power of temptation. |
