Inspired by an encounter with seven wild turkeys.
Thornton Wilder said:

"We can only be said to be alive in those moments
when our hearts are conscious of our treasures."

Earth Eagle

Single file wave,
hunting nuts and seeds,

that other critters saved.
The squirrel cache thieves!

Mister Tall-and-twelve-years-old
wattles up to me—

Deep red draping wattle,
saying he’s a he.

Scopes the place, sees my face,
and then he fluffs his wings!

Opens up the inner vision.
Ooze and Oz, we sing.

The fluff that causes us to wonder
sometimes shows identity,

or causes us to see inside,
wherein we see a fantasy,

It causes us to notice,
and sometimes woos the hens,

Sometimes doors it opens,
and always teaches gratitude

to "that I am," for look: the harvest!
The earth now shares her fruit!

Having seen the flock,
I now know I will care!

Having seen the fluff,
I now know I can share!

Humble wave as one now runs,
awing us with flight!

Opens up our inner vision
rising to such height!
