About two friends final trip to a beach.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” Charlie said as he looked over at his friend also laid in the golden sand. “Isn’t it beautiful?” He sighs as he repeated himself. He looked over to the sea as it swallowed less and less of the sand. “Have you ever thought what is out there? The lands we could have seen. The people we have never met, the accents we will never here.”
His friend looked over to him and smiled, “We have plenty of time yet.”
Charlie picked up some soft golden sand and ran it through his black-gloved fingers, “As our time ticks by and the sand falls from my fingers like the hour glass that is all our lives. My time is running out Sam.” He glances at the heavens and then back at Sam, “We could possible live a thousand years and not know what is out there. Could you imagine the amazing sites, do you think it is like Doctor Who? Do you think there are planets like ours out there.” As he finished the sentence a beautiful shooting star shot across the sky. He then cheekily looked into her eyes while running his hand over his friends face.
The sound of a tractor pulling a small white rusty boat out of the sea stopped the two of them and as they looked over they noticed a man walking near the boat wearing a bright yellow life jacket. Charlie slyly picked up a drink that was sat next to him; he took one small look at his friend and then placed it to his lips. As he closed his eyes and gulped. He let the liquid flow down his throat and then he looked over towards the old wooden short pier, which was a quarter of a mile away. He then looked back at his friend moved up so he was resting on his arms and then rolled over onto his side so he could gaze longingly at his friend.
Sam smiled and asked inquisitively, “Why you looking at me like that?”
Charlie closed his eyes and just listened to the perfect noise of the sea crashing upon the sand. “Your just so beautiful.”
Sam looked away as she whispered, “Your so sweet.” While her face went crimson.
“I’ve always been called sweet or cheesy.” Charlie picked up some more fine golden sand and let it run through his hand. He rolled back over onto his back and placed his hands behind his head closing his eyes once again.
A little time must have passed without much happening because when he next opened his eyes the sea was much further away. He turned his head to see if his friend was still laid there. “Where do you think you will be in five years?”
Sam taken back by the questioning replied, “Somewhere exotic, after I have won the lottery.”
Charlie breathed in heavily, “There is money to be made in the lottery.”
Sam smirked, “Where are you going to be then?”
“Well, I will be in a place far away, but I will still look out for you time to time. You know I will always love you?”
Suddenly the two was disturbed as a bunch of teenagers started to scream and shout at the other side of the beach. Charlie took the distraction as another chance to have some of his drink. Finishing it he stood up and kicked at the floor. “I’ll be back in a minute.” Charlie strolled up to the sea and then he crouched down and placed some sea water into the cup, swilled it out and then he hurled the cup into the sea, he turned from the sea which was taking its leave from the beach and waved at Sam. Seconds later he turned from her he wiped a tear from his eye and then he began to stare at his palm, he run his second finger over the life line and then he bent down and washed his face using the cool sea water. As he slowly ambled back he began to feel himself beginning to float away. When he finally got back to Sam he turned to her and asked in a sorrowful tone, “Can you.” He paused as he sobbed, “Go get me a drink from the pub.” Again he paused, “Up there. Get yourself one to.” Sam stood up to leave and he looked at her for one last time giving her a reassuring smile he placed a ten-pound note over into the palm of her hand running his hand over hers and at that moment he felt a tear trickle from his eye. “Always know, I will love you forever.” Charlie looked up to the faultless sky before continuing, “No matter what happens.” He looked down to the floor and wiped a tear from his cheek. “You have always made me proud.” His words started to fade into nothing, “I’m sorry for what I became.” The words barely carried in the light breeze.
Sam looked away and towards the pub and then she looked back she looked at Charlie and then she looked over her shoulder at the pub. “Are you sure you want a drink?”
Charlie who was trying to stop the constant flow of tears running down his slightly tanned cheek, “Course.” He then slumped himself back on to his back with his hands rested behind his head and smiled. Taking one last look at the beautifully calm sea and the cloudless shiny sky he closed his eyes as his friend made her way to the pub.
Sam had only been gone for a few minutes but deep in her heart she knew what she was going to go back to, even before she had reached Charlie’s lifeless body she had collected her phone from her pocket and began to ring an ambulance. But even she knew it was to late.
Charlie’s personal pain was now over, as she informed the emergency services of there position she looked back towards the pub, a few seconds later she hung up the phone and then her tears began cascaded from her face, she kissed him upon his lips. Placing the drinks down she lay next to the corpse rest her head upon his motionless chest and closed her eyes as she listened to the sea lapping up the beach in the distance.
