This morning, I was washing out a glass jelly jar so that I could put it in the recyclable bin for the next pick up. As I washed the jar, I remembered my Grandma Newland’s set of juice glasses. The glasses were jelly jars with fruit or flower decorations on them. When the jars were empty, Grandma would wash them and we would drink orange juice out of them.

My grandparents recycled (reused) everything they could. However, it is the glass jars that I remember most. Glass jars with screw on lids Grandma washed and used to store leftovers. I remember Grandma had one jar she used only for bacon grease. She would use the leftover grease to fry eggs and for a few other types of cooking, in which she wanted the flavor of the bacon.
