These are 14 of the first poems I have ever attempted to write.
1.
Here I stand in my backyard,
An autumn breeze cooling my skin,
I stare at the sky as brown clouds roll past,
Covering the stars I so hoped to see,
And I wish you were here,
This love not quite unrequited,
A passing flirtation to you,
The world to me,
I hope I see you in my dreams.

2.
I know who I am,
Not a good man,
Not a bad man,
I don’t deserve you,
I deserve this static,
This limbo you forced on me,
When I met you I knew who I was,
Now I know who I want to be,
I want to earn you,
Even if you’re already mine.

3.
Tonight I stood on my porch,
I watched the sky, covered in clouds,
I pitied the stars tonight,
They burn so brightly, they try so hard,
Tonight they were all but forgotten,
Will I be forgotten no matter how bright I burn?
Will we all?
Does it really matter after all?
We’re but a brief spark in the fire of this reality.

4.
Who is this God fellow?
Does he walk among us, watching judging?
What he must think of our world,
Our decadence and waste,
Our gluttony and selfishness,
Would he see our beauty,
Through the stench of our filth?
Would he bother to see the gardens of Sodom?
The murals of Gomorrah?
Or would he cast it all in fire and fear?

5.
When I was a young man my father said to me,
“Be the best man you can son,
And I will always be proud.”
I often wonder if he is proud.

6.
I sit here listening to opera,
In the darkness of my room,
Curtains closed,
Nothing but this glairing machine as company,
The right side of my bed is cold,
It was warm before.
I pull a strand of hair off of the pillow,
It’s darker than my own.

7.
I’m waiting again,
Sitting,
Waiting,
Foot tapping,
Slightly whistling,
Wasting time,
Every moment an eternity,
The oven dings,
Time to eat.

8.
I watched an argument today,
It was full of hatred and bile,
Someone had cheated, or lied,
The couple finally parted ways,
Both mourning in their own way,
I laughed softly and went back to my book,
What’s the point if it’s all easy?

9.
Some days I want my sanity to disappear,
It holds by a thread and tether,
It won’t be long now,
You’ll drive me insane,
And I’ll still love you.

1o.
I lay awake some nights,
Tossing, turning, sleeplessness grips me,
These are the nights I love,
My mind soars free,
I solve the problems of life,
Of love,
The secret of happiness,
Maybe tonight I’ll write some of it down.

11.
I’m intrigued,
A leaf falls,
Slowly rotating in the breeze,
I’m intrigued,
A child cries in the grocery store,
Pleading an inaudible cacophony,
I’m intrigued,
You look across the room at me,
Smiling slightly,
I’m intrigued.

12.
War never changes,
Eye for eye,
All for a fool’s errand,
And hollow causes,
Love never changes,
Hand in hand,
All for passion and romance,
And hallowed oaths.

13.
Our lives are all fleeting,
We try and leave our mark,
As small as it may be,
Striving for immortality,
Life is too short,
Let’s spend the day in bed.

14.
The tree outside my window is swaying,
The wind blows it back and forth,
It scratches my window,
Back,
Forth,
The sound a metronome for my thoughts,
The noise some, but not me,
I find it comforting.
Back,
Forth,
I predict its sway,
Keeping time to the rhythm,
Nature’s music winding through my head,
Back,
Forth,
I whistle a tune,
Swaying with the beat,
The song of the wind moving me,
Back,
Forth.
