BLOOD ON MY HANDS

It wasn't meant to be this way, as I look back at that night.
It was party-time and drinks flowed free, it was sheer delight.
The music loud and I could feel the need to get away at last,
I stumbled out the door to my car and drove off pretty fast.

My head ached and I felt really sick, I needed to get home,
knowing it was Halloween night and kids were sure to roam.
I slowed down to thirty-five, which seemed to be a safer speed
and lit myself a cigarette just because I felt the smoking need.

I rolled the car window down to breathe in the fresh night air,
seeing children up ahead who were walking without a care.
Trick or treat bags in their hands, goblins dressed to play,
laughter turned to screams, seeing a car headed their way..

I felt the bump and heard the thud, then my blood ran cold.
The car swerved around the devil himself (he wasn't very old).
I knew that someone was hurt, but that was not in my plans
to have the evening end this way, with blood on my hands.

I sped away into the night in hopes that I wouldn't be caught,
no one would know and I would get away, likely as naught.
The morning paper told the story that a child of ten had died,
killed by a hit and run, and I felt the pain of guilt deep inside.

Shaking off my deep fear, I drove to the police station in town
and turned myself in, before that child was laid in the ground.
The moral of this sad tale is NOT TO DRIVE WHEN DRINKING
when a child's blood is a result of impaired ungodly thinking.

HALLOWEEN IS COMING, DRIVE WITH UTMOST CARE!
