I was up late one night and the words kept poking me, so I sat down and wrote this.
Empathetic, I'll listen

To your pains and your cries.

They'll poke at my tears,

'Til they leak out my eyes.

And once you're asleep,

I'll stay up and pray

That God may protect you

While I am away.

Give me your sore heart,

I'll give you my good one.

May not be much, but

At least it's still beating.

Your heart is in pieces,

And they stab at my lungs

But don't worry about it

Take mine and run.

The sun wakes and protects you.

Pain's afraid of the light.

I realize now that

I'll never shine quite that bright.

I'm dulled and I'm scarred,

But I'll fight to the death

If it means you can have

This weight off your chest.

Night comes again

And we're back to square one.

While others aren't conscious,

In their dreams, having fun.

But keep talking, I'll listen

For as long as it takes

Don't ever say sorry

We all make mistakes.

I'd take your troubles

You know that I would

But then what would you learn?

Scars can be good.

I'm sorry, my darling,

You have to be strong.

Just hold on a bit longer

Soon the pain will be gone.

I can't solve your problems

I can't fight your fears

All I can do now is listen

And shed half your tears.

It kills me to say this,

But you're killing me.

Take your broken heart back,

So that my lungs can breathe.

I know that I failed you,

As protector and friend.

Maybe I'll be better

When this happens again.

Your heart scarred my ribcage

I hope mine soothed yours.

Because at the end of the day

What else are friends for?
