Happenings in the month of August, with a touch of alphabet.
August

Autumn approaches, and I’m
Burned instead of tanned. We
Crash on plastic chairs in your backyard,
Drinks with ice in hand, because
Everything is sweating slightly.
Fireflies and bonfires light up nights and
Green has never been so green. My
Hair curls wildly from the humidity.
I long for one last trip to the beach.
June bugs buzz loudly from every direction.
Kisses sweet and sour from drinking
Lemonade. In your car, we blast
Mixed CDs without a care. It’s a
Night out on the town,
On a Tuesday because we don’t have any other
Plans. We sing along anything but
Quietly, overpowering a symphony of crickets,
Ready for that last trip to the beach.
Sand sticks to our feet as we run, nearly
Tripping, racing to jump off rocks into the lake.
Underwater, all is silent and dark, I see the
Vague silhouettes of tiny fish near the bottom.
We dive and splash, trying to catch them. I yell like
Xena, warrior princess. I know it’s over when
You stop calling, and I start
Zipping up my sweaters again.
