A poem inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's story of Beren and LĂșthien.
I woke to an enchanting voice
distant under leaf of tree
singing sadly to the stars
so lovely it enchanted me

I rose slowly from my bed
darkness veiled my weary eyes
softly opened up my window
and watched the moon rise

The voice was drawing nearer now
a desire filled my heart and mind
quietly went down the stairs
hoping that the voice, I'd find

My bare feet met the moistened grass
and I wandered off into the wood
following that voice far-off
to find the singer, if I could

With each step I took the voice was stronger
drawn into a web of spell
I saw him in a grassy clearing
sitting by a dried-up well

Very tall he was, and fair
his hair darker than the darkest night
eyes brighter than the stars
from him came pale silver light

His voice was gentler than an angel's
sweet and soft and so intense
deprived of will I stood and listened
to his spell was no defense

He sang of ages long forgotten
of a shadow and a fear
of evil that brought many sorrows
and the loss of one so dear

He sang of her and called her name
and a vision came to me
of two lovers in a distant past
fate did not then let them be

Long ago they perished
separated by ill chance
he was mourning for her loss
wishing more than brief romance

Still he sings, I heard his call
I understand its meaning now
and as I listen I remember
long ago I made a vow

When hope is new and all is healed
and there is nothing left to fear
sing of us, then call my name
and wait for me, I will be here
