barrier - anything that restrains or obstructs progress
Barriers

Innoxious words that separate
the facetious differences we create
and focus on the hidden hate
that festers just beneath the skin.

Civil, though we may aspire,
a nod, a smile, make each a liar.
Words act like a razor wire
to keep others out and us within.

Invisibly, words stand like walls
protecting hate's silent cabals,
impervious to that which galls
and destroys collective dignity.

Yet words form the sole foundation
upon which to heal our nation.
They raise us to a higher station
when proffered with simple honesty.

The time is well past for debate.
Speak not from ignorance or hate
but from the heart, ere it's too late,
and watch the barriers dissipate.
