Just for a laugh!
Not too long ago I read an article on a Korean news website that told the story of two Taiwanese sisters who “naturalized” (became official Korean citizens) and had dreams of opening their very own drug store. They boast a tale of heroism, courage under fire and opposition to adversity.
Now that’s all fine.
I suppose opening one’s own pharmacy in a country whose winters are colder than a Smirnoff Storm, is quite an inviting concept. Obviously there is a lot of money to make in this process, and of course no one is going to complain about an ambition as elementary as saving little ones from a big bad cold.
But this dream of theirs caught my eye and when I thought about it, it started to make a little sense. You see, living in Taiwan involves two things: Eating rice, and practicing kickboxing. (I’m being very vague of course but their living conditions are not what I  would call westerly.)
Pick a fight with any local who habi’tz near a river or lake, and I guarantee you his left elbow will stay hinged up your right nostril for the next three seconds that you will remain conscious. You’ll wake up with a tinge rope attached to your ankle, being pulled down a dirt road by a laughing Scotsman driving a second world war Land Rover.
They are an uncanny group of interesting people who spend their days wondering which fish is cleaner than the other, grinding the skin off, because a healthy meal is what keeps the fishmonger’s business in business.
So granted, moving to Korea to open a chemical weapons factory is indeed a foresight worth its weight;
and for once, you won’t have to beat a teenager into a coma to get the cold knocked out of him...
