Children search their house for a strange noise
SRPY SNORES

Scarlet was playing with her dinosaurs and horses in her room, when she heard a strange sound.
“Mer-rum. Mm-rum.”
She sat still for a moment and listened.
“Mm-mer-um.”
“What is that noise?” she wondered. Scarlet dropped her toys and went searching for the sound.

Scarlet heard something coming from the kitchen. Her mother was in there baking a cake. “Mommy, mommy, I heard a noise and I don’t know what it is!”
“Did it sound like this?” her mother asked, as she cranked the handle on the sifter.
“Scratch, scratch. Scratch, scratch.”
“No, that’s not it,” Scarlet said. “Listen.”
They both were quiet.
“Mer-rum. Mm-mer-rum.”
“I don’t know what that is,” said her mother.

Scarlet kept looking for the sound. She went into the living room. Her little brother, Spencer, was on the floor playing with his cars & trucks. Scarlet said, “Spencer, Spencer, I heard a noise and I don’t know what it is!”
Spencer asked, “Did it sound like this?”
He pressed a button on his fire engine. “Wee-oo, wee-oo, wee-oo!”
“No, that’s not it,” Scarlet said. “Listen.”
They both were quiet.
“Mer-rum. Mm-mer-um.”
“What is that?” Spencer asked.
“I don’t know,” Scarlet answered “but I’m going to find out.”
“Me, too!” said Spencer.

They left the living room and walked into the hall by the front door. They heard a noise. It went, “Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle.”
“Is that it?” Spencer asked.
“No,” said Scarlet. “That is the fish tank.”
They could hear something in the dining room, so they went there next. Their father was just sitting down with a cup of tea and the newspaper.
“Daddy, Daddy,” they said, “We heard a noise and don’t know what it is!”
“Is that so?” their father asked. “Did it sound like this?”
He shook his newspaper, “Rustle, rustle, rustle.”
Scarlet and Spencer looked at each other, then answered together, “No.”
Scarlet said, “Listen, Daddy and see if you can hear it.”
They all were quiet and faintly they could hear, “Mm-er-um. Mer-rum.”
“I don’t know what that is,” he told the kids. “But let me know when you find it.”
Scarlet and Spencer kept searching for the sound. They heard a “drip, drip, drip” from the bathroom faucet. They heard “tick, tick, tick” from the clock in the hall, but they still couldn’t find the “Mm-rum” sound.
They were standing outside their parents’ bedroom. They could still hear, “Mer-um, mer-rum.”
“I think it’s getting louder,“ said Spencer.
“I think you’re right!” said Scarlet.
They followed the sound into their parents’ room, and there on the bed was their cat, Srpy! She was sleeping and snoring! That sound was coming from her. “Mm-rum, mer-rum.”
“Mommy, Daddy, come quick! We found the noise!” Scarlet said.
Her parents appeared in the doorway. “What is it?” they asked.
“It’s Srpy!” Scarlet and Spencer said.
“Srpy?” Their parents asked. “Are you sure?” asked their mother.
“Yes,” Scarlet said. “Listen.”
And sure enough, as they all stood quietly around the sleeping cat, they could hear, “Mer-rum, mm-rum.”
They all began to laugh, Srpy woke up.
“Oh, we woke her,” Spencer said.
Srpy looked up at them. They all reached for the cat, scratching her ears, chin, belly, and back.
Srpy made a different noise now. “Purr, purr, purr.”
