a cold trek in the snow

Snow-Bound

I heard the howling of the wind
across the drifting snow.
It's icy chill and loneliness
had nowhere else to go.

It echoed in the valleys deep
and in the darkest wood.
It froze my fingers and my toes
and blew right through my hood.

I tread a ways by golden rays
in snow up to my knees.
The sun was falling in the west,
it felt like ten degrees.

I saw a wild dervish dance
a twister of snow white.
I knew it wouldn't be too long
I'd face a winter's night.

I kept on plodding step by step,
direction homeward bound,
guided by a full moon's light;
the wind the only sound.
